Question:

Lumps in underarm breastfeeding!?

Last week I woke up to find a pretty big noticable lump on my right armpit, and also noticed several small lumps in my left armpit. I recently had a baby (2 weeks ago) and am wondering if this is due to my milk coming in last week. The nurse told me it was due to breastfeeding and that it should go away in a week, its been a week and they are still there, not as noticable but I can still definately feel them. I've tried warm water, massaging it and nothing. Is this really breastfeeding related, has this happened to anyone else, and how long did it take for it to go away? I'm so scared its cancer : (

  1. probably blocked milk ducts, ask your midwife how to shift them

  2. take yourself to the doctors get checked they will prob send u for a mammogram , that will set u straight , even tho this could be milk ducts blocked or milk coming in dont give it any time to go away , get this checked asap ,   best to be in the know go to the gp

  3. i would make a appoinment to see a doctor as my friend had then right after her little boy and they winded up having to drain them they was clogged milk ducks and well it ended up getting huge and she needed surgery to fix them i would just go have them to check them so that you know everything is ok

  4. I had lumps under my arms not long after I gave birth to my second child, I checked with my doctor and had an ultrasound (they wouldn't do a mammogram because I was  breastfeeding) and thankfully it turned out to be nothing just swollen glands  it only took about 1-2 weeks before they started to disappear.... If they haven't gone away soon just check with your doctor to ease your mind....

  5. Yikes, you probably don't want to know my answer.  I had a lump in my armpit about 2 weeks after birth, midwife said prob clogged milkduct, I didn't think so (it didn't act like that), and 3 weeks later still had it, showed her again, and she was puzzled as to why it was still there, said that if it is cancer, it can grow fast while lactating.  It didn't seem to grow, and so next I went to a naturopath who also tends to make referrals as soon as it's out of his scope, and instead of doing an ultrasound on the lump, he referred me to a couple breast surgeons.  He seemed concerned, and puzzled too.  I'm going as soon as our insurance is switched.  I really don't like that they were both concerned by this!  Really I don't.  I looked up a bit about breast cancer online, and it does seem like first resort is to collect some cells with a needle, which to me is a lot less scary than surgery to remove the lump.  Please just make an appointment right away, and press the issue - don't let them tell you to "wait and watch".  Tell them you want an ultrasound done at the minimum, and ideally, to have a sample taken so they can see whether the cells are cancerous or not under a microscope.  Mastitis might be another (and less scary) thing to check out - it's a breast infection that starts with a lump and becomes extremely painful over time, but from what I understand that's basically a clogged milk duct to start with.
