Question:

Lumps on shetland pony??

I have a 3 year old Shetland mare. She was born and raised here. I've noticed she's started to get random solid lumps on her over the last few weeks. There's two on her nose, one on her ear, one on her shoulder/breast and one on her rump. They seem painless coz she let's me fiddle with them and they haven't changed in size really. There's no hair on them, so they kinda resemble warts.

Any ideas what it could be? Something I should get checked out?

  1. Sounds like it could be fugus.

  2. I think I probably know what it is.

    They are called Lipomas

They are Tumors (Don't worry not THOSE kind of tumors) which are essentially hard lumps of fat. Dogs get them all the time. They are not of any concern, and are harmless but sometimes they can grow in places they might cause discomfort......in that case call the vet.

As your horse ages he/she is likely to grow more, but make sure you don't spoil your horse.

  3. if you guys love horses...have a go at this horse riding game:

  4. i think you should just take it to the vets just in case.

  5. idk

  6. My horse gets small lumps over her, and they are fly bites, the mosquito's at my yard are bad at the moment, if you put a fly rug and fly mask on her i think you will find they will disappear after a few days. Hope this helps.

  7. its ok i have 5 ponys and evey one of them has a lump somewhere or another but just to be sure check with the vet

  8. They  could even be welts from bug bites.. bugs are bad this year its crazy!!

My horse had a reaction to something in his environment and broke out into 22 lumps a little bit of everywhere we biopsied one and was told that  they were esonphilic granulomas( that may be spelled wrong)

But over time they went away..he breaks out into hives alot though now.. Have a vet check them out if they keep spreading or get bigger..Good luck :) hope its nothing serious

  9. it could be small tumors, bug bites, fungus, ect. but i would do a little internet research then call a vet just in case.

  10. I know that my Shetland as well as paint horse have a hard time with insect bites and can have swollen bites allover them, so it could be that. Sometimes younger horses and ponies are known to get warts but they are usually smaller and are found on the face around the muzzle. Another possibility is that ponies can get fatty tumors and sometimes they have no effect and other times if you see them on the outside of the body they could be inside the body and could ultimately surround important body parts such as intestine, etc. I'm not trying to scare you, but a similar situation happened to my childhood pony and he colic-ed (strangulating lipoma) and we had to put him down, so you may want to get your pony checked out by a vet early on to prevent anything, if that is what it is. Also another possibility is if your pony is lighter colored, grey or has white it could have a melanoma which are sometimes be harmless and sometimes very dangerous. I would be on the safe side and have your vet come out and check your pony out. Hope everything goes well!
