I have just started a new job as a lunchtime supervisor for 5-6 year olds. I am finding it difficult to find some ideas for short games to play on the carpet. If any one has any ideas for some short games i would be very greatfull.

  1. Well....there's always the traditional duck, duck, goose. But that might get a little hectic i suppose. Try a game where  everyone first looks at the floor, and then on the count of three, everyone looks at just one person. If they're looking at the same person looking at them, then they get to sit in the middle, until the end of the next round.

Orrrr, you could play a game where you have something small and everyone has to secretly pass it around the circle. One person can be in the middle and they have to guess who has it. The kids can fake pass it too...you may want to hint this to them. Good luck!

  2. GAMES? hmmmmm I 'll encourage them to eat and when they finish I'll explain to them that talking is allowed, but to keep those voices down..... Children enjoy talking among themselves. If you start games, you really need to keep an eye on them because it is very hard to control large groups.

  3. broken telephone, tic tac toe, maybe some board games, magic hat a game were u start a story and each child helps it to finish it off

  4. How about having a quiet discussion with the kids so they can practice conversation?  Talk about what they did last night at home or that morning at school, what they'll do for the weekend, etc.  It really stresses conversation, taking turns, listening, public speaking.

  5. Have them play telephone.  start with whispering a word to 1 kid he whispers it to another and so on till the last kid and see what the word becomes.

  6. So this is occupying some time after they have finished eating ?  I have never heard of this before - normally, that's when recess starts.  Let's see

have one child stand up in front of the others - everyone closes their eyes, change one thing on the child's appearance, and someone guesses.

Doggy doggy where's your bone, somebody took it from your home - this is a classic favorite where one child sits in a chair with a store bought (or die cut) bone is placed under the chair, someone takes it,everyone puts their hands behind their backs and the child in the chair guesses who took it.

Guess who's missing - have one child stand behind a door or someplace where you can still see him/her and the children guess.

    I spy

Telephone is always good and easy

  7. I spy is always fun and it gets all children involved. fingerplays might work depending on how many children are in your group. disney/ movie trivia is also fun. think of a few questions about popular kid movies and start asking.
