Luol Deng wears a T shirt with an outline of Africa in the All Star game - NBA Update
Chicago Bulls star Luol Deng did not have a very good outing on Monday.
He only played for six minutes in the NBA All Star game before injuring his wrist that forced him out. However, the message he wanted to convey that night, he was pretty successful with.
Deng, who is originally from Sudan, Africa came in to the game wearing a T shirt that was bit different from what his other team mates were wearing. It featured an outline of his native country’s continent, and not only this, but Deng also pointed towards
it during the announcement of his name, just before the start of the game.
Such move is against the dress code of NBA and can lead to mild punishments and Deng was well aware of that, however he still took the risk. Fortunately, no word has come out from NBA relating to any sort of a punishment or a fine.
During the game, when he was asked to shed light on what he wanted to achieve with this, he responded
"If I get fined, I'm OK," he told" To me, what I did is worth it for me. I wouldn't do something that's negative. I'm not advertising anything. I just felt like being where I'm from and where I came from, it's something that I always wanted to see as a kid.
I'm sure there's a kid out there, or a lot of kids, who really enjoyed it and made them happy to see that."
Such things have been done by the players, affiliated to other sports in the past as well and there is nothing wrong with it at all. And keeping in mind, it was just an All Star game and not the regular season game, it is safe to say that Deng did not do
anything wrong.
Deng is the first Sudanese player to ever play in NBA and he is proud of that fact. Although he lived in UK for most part of his life before coming to US for NBA, this move shows that he has still not forgotten his native country. Hopefully, in coming years,
more players from Sudan of Deng’s class can enter the league and do their country proud.
