I will arrive in Luzerne on the 29th this month for 2 days, 2 nights. Could somebody help me with my initiary?

I have a railpass, so it entitles me to free ride on steamer/boat on the lake or reduced price to either of the alps. Which do you think is a must? We could only afford either one for the time/budget that we have.

On the 2nd day, we plan to visit the firstly the glacier museum, then the lion monument, then we plan to spend the rest of the afternoon/evening walking through the old city.

We would also appreciate any tips/comments on good places to eat (preferably cheap), and anything else we must not miss in Luzerne.

Thank you so much for your help! and have a belated Happy New Year!

  1. Cheapest places to eat are in the grocery stores. The chains like Migros or Co-op often have cafeterias in their larger stores. And the food is fabulous because they usually employ chefs.

Just know that sometimes you will pay by weight, but if you go without meat, then the meal is less expensive.

Also, first buy your drinks in the store and you will save a lot that way as well.

The bridge is free and really nice. There are paintings all on the inside through it. I believe you can also go up on the old wall. You will also want to go to the mirror maze at the glacier garden, that's fun.

Enjoy! And happy new year to you too.

  2. Luzern is a great city for strolling, but if the weather isn't cooperating, you could also hop into the casino at the lakeside or check out the Kunstmuseum (art museum) across from the main train station. There is a great Italian restaurant called "Valentino" by the Hotel des Balances in the Old Town. Many of the lake tours operate over the lunch hour - get a table next to a window and enjoy the cruise while you dine. It's a really nice way to spend an afternoon.

  3. Either Mount Pilatus or Titlus is a must. The boatride is nice--less so in January than in the summer! You could also plan to add the boat in to the afternoon in Lucerne, you don't have to take the whole tour on most of them (although I'm not sure how it is in the winter) and they don't cost much (6 franks?) for a few stops.

Money-wise, if you have a few-days-in-a-month type pass, it would be a waste to use it on the boat trip. If you have a consecutive-days type pass, you're not losing anything adding the boat trip in to the afternoon-in-Lucerne.

  4. You can't go wrong in Luzerne, no matter what you do.  The city is so beautiful.  My husband and I went there last year.  The Lion monument was my favorite thing in the city.  Also, for food, just walk around the lake/river by the water tower, there are plenty of reasonably priced places to eat and you can sit outside by the water.  There is also a ski lift type thing that takes you up to Mount Pilatus which is very cool.  For something different, you could walk down the river and climb the watch tower on your right.  You can see the whole city from up there.  Have fun!!!  And don't forget to shop!

  5. I love Lucerne!! (I live in Bern, Switzerland). You should defenitly take boat ride on the lake. The glacier museum is nice, so is the lion monument.

If you want a good place to eat (maybe for llunch or an afternoon bite to eat) I'd suggest the Migros self serve restaurant. the food is sooooooooooo good and there's a big choice.

    Have fun in Lucerne!!!!
