Lydia Cheah Li Ya stuns Tee Jing Yi to claim Women’s Singles title at Selangor Open – Badminton news
Malaysia’s talented young shuttler Lydia Cheah Li Ya surprised everyone when she grabbed Women’s Singles title after defeating her higher ranked rival Tee Jing Yi in the final contest of Selangor Open in Kuala Lumpur, on Sunday, February 26.
Lydia, who was the second seed in the Women’s Singles draw of the event, showed her impressive skills and managed to win against the top seed and World Number 49 Jing Yi in a mouth-watering fight.
The lower ranked Lydia played to her maximum potential and won the three-set contest by taking 42 minutes in the court.
The top seed Jing Yi was the favourite to win this fight but she could not live up to the expectations and lost the match in three games.
In the first set, both ladies entertained the local fans by playing superb game and also remained close on score board until the one-minute interval.
After the break, Jing Yi tried to play fast badminton but failed to dominate the pace of rallies as her lower ranked compatriot refused to drop her speed.
Lydia remained close to the top seed and reached at the concluding phase of first game in similar fashion.
At this crucial stage, Lydia failed to control her nerves and played negative badminton and eventually lost the set with a 19-21 score on the board.
In the second set, Lydia played different game this time as she did not let her opponent to dictate the pace of rallies anymore. She took a wonderful lead until the end of opening half.
After the interval, Lydia remained on track by playing to her maximum potential and remained successful by taking the game with a stunning 21-10 score on the board.
In the decider, both ladies remained close in the opening points but Lydia took over the control until the end of first half.
After the break, she continued playing positive and aggressive badminton and managed to win the deciding game with a remarkable score of 21-14.
This Women’s Singles title match ended in the favour of Lydia, who defeated Jing Yi with a 19-21, 21-10 and 21-14 score on the board.
