Lydia Ko among star performers at Hoylake
Amateur Lydia Ko managed to put her name on the list of star performers at the Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012 after she registered an overall 297 to finish tied for the 17th position.
Ko has taken part in some of the most nerve-racking competitions on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) in her brief amateur career, but the last week’s battle at Royal Liverpool, Hoylake was the
toughest of all.
Hit by bad weather conditions and strong winds that swept across the course throughout the four days, the major championship dragged on till late in the evening on Sunday.
Due to windy conditions on Friday, the tournament officials scrambled to call off the second round and resume it on Saturday. The last two rounds were played on Sunday, causing players to complete their round
in a tighter schedule.
Ko, who belongs to New Zealand and has risen to fame after grabbing her first LPGA title at CN Canadian Women’s Open 2012, stood firm till the final moment.
She posted good scores in the first three rounds, but could not keep her momentum in fourth round as she carded a 78.
Ko performed well in the second round on Saturday as she scored a 71. With five birdies and four bogeys, the amateur star managed to improve her position on the leaderboard.
Although the start was grim in the second round as she bogeyed the first two holes, the young prodigy regained her momentum by shooting two birdies on the par-4 fourth and par-5 fifth hole.
Commentators said that the Kiwi golfer, who has no plans to turn professional in the near future because she intends to finish her studies first, has once again proved her mettle by playing well in a fearsome
field.
Despite holding her ground right from the start, Ko could not help blaming the rough weather for slow play.
Sharing her thoughts at the end of the final round on Sunday, the youngest LPGA winner said she faced difficult making perfect shots strong gusts of wind made the greens look tougher.
“It was tough for me. The greens were flooding -- it because really tough today. I mean, this is one of the hardest golf courses I've ever played, and for the weather to be really bad, it didn't help,” Ko
said.
