Lydia Ko emerges the youngest amateur winner in New Zealand Golf – Golf News
The New Zealand women’s golf championships produced exciting results. Teenager Lydia Ko redefined the New Zealand women’s golf history when she emerged as the youngest winner. She beat her close friend Cecilia Cho in 4&3 in a match play during the 36-hole final round of this championship.
The event which was took place at the Russley Golf Club produced some exciting moments for the teenager. Ko recently celebrated her 14th birthday after winning New Zealand stroke play championship on Sunday.
She has been playing exceptionally during her past outings. Last month, she also won the Australian stroke play title. This was a great victory for her as she has achieved a big milestone in her young career. At this age, she has certainly showed signs that she can compete against the best in women’s golf.
Ko fought hard in the match against her opponent. Early on, she was down in her match against Cho, but made a superb comeback by making a couple of birdies on the stretch. The teenager was seen fighting hard in the match and never was down during the day.
This was a simply amazing match between both the ladies. They both fought hard against each other. In the end, it was the teenage sensation Ko who made it through and won this final match.
Ko did fought in her match hard and played some sensible golf. She also played promising golf during her last holes which gave her the victory. This victory also gave her a lot of confidence and she hopes to improve her record further.
Ko after picking up the title said, "It was my goal at the start of the week to win the New Zealand Strokeplay and New Zealand Amateur titles and I am really proud to achieve it. It was a tough match today with Cecilia, she is a great golfer and I had to play my best to win."
Ko is now the second golfer who has followed the footsteps of her compatriot, Dana Kim. Kim has already achieved this milestone and has won the New Zealand stroke play as well as New Zealand Amateur titles.
