Lydia Ko makes her way into United States amateur women's golf championship
Number one seed in the amateur world, Lydia Ko has qualified for the United States amateur women's golf championship, which will take place at the Rhode Island Country Club, starting from August 8, 2011. Ko compiled a score of even-par 71 in the final round
of a pre-qualifying event to lead Kuriko Tsukiyama by two strokes and win the event.
The 14-year-old from New Zealand seemed really confident and kicked off with a decent start. She reeled a few birdies at the front nine to wrap it up with a score of three-under-par. However, things became a little slow on the back nine, where the player
dropped a couple of shots to seal the day at 71.
The win secured her spot in a list of four amateurs, who earned a qualification into the tournament by winning the qualifying event. A total of 35 golfers are said to compete in the tournament, which is considered as a flagship event on the tour.
Commenting on her win, Ko said, “I'm very happy that I have qualified for the US amateur because this is giving me another opportunity to play a tournament with other competitors that I don't know and more competition.”
Ko’s triumph was a huge relief for her manager c*m caddie, Guy Wilson, “So many uncertainties are now all gone. With this being the first week of a five-week trip, it would have been a major bummer to have been knocked out of contention. So we are all systems
go, now to book flights for tomorrow.”
Ko is confident of being able to bear the pressure and post another victory on the tour. She said this in response to a question thrown towards her regarding the upcoming championship.
If Ko manages to remain calm, as she usually is during her matches, then she will earn herself the honour of becoming the first New Zealander to win the amateur championship.
The 14-year-old boasts maturity beyond her age, not just in her game-play, but her ability to handle pressure situations. Although Ko is bearing a huge load of responsibility in terms of representing New Zealand in the championships, she has proven time
and again that the weight isn’t too much for her to carry.
