Lydia Ko rises to 41st in world rankings
Amateur Lydia Ko has done well on the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) as the young prodigy has risen one spot to rank 41st in the Women’s World Golf Rankings.
Having risen to prominence through her first LPGA victory at the CN Canadian Women’s Open 2012, Ko has crafted a solid career both on the LPGA Tour and amateur golf.
Ko is originally from South Korea but her patents later moved to New Zealand. The Kiwi golfer is young enough to have grown up during a time when the majority of her peers worked hard and focused on amateur tournaments, but Ko has also got her feet wet on the LPGA Tour —something that helps her eclipse the popularity of most of the big names in women’s golf.
Although she outrivaled top-ranked contenders at the CN Canadian Women’s Open, her focus in still on amateur golf as she has said in several interviews that she has no intention of starting her pro career at the moment because she has to focus on her studies first.
The amateur star recently took part in the Espirito Santo World Amateur Team's Championship held in Turkey, where she displayed a solid performance and helped the Team New Zealand do well.
Although the Kiwis finished fifth in the tournament, a solid score by Ko was enough to keep the team in contention till the final moments of the event.
Ko, who is known for her good nature and humble stature, found herself in high spirits after she touched down at the airport in New Zealand just yesterday, as fans came to greet her for a stunning performance in Turkey.
Speaking to the media, Ko said that she is thrilled about her performance and the way things are going in the current season, but was keen to point out that she could not get off to a fast start in Turkey.
She said that she picked up pace from the second round and carded a 69, 67 and 68, cementing her team’s position on the leaderboard.
“It's been a long time. I started of pretty average and it was a slow start but then, you know, it was a good finish. New Zealand did well at the world amateur team championships so it's been real good and I'm happy to be back home," Ko said.
