Lydia Ko says becoming pro is not on her mind right now, wants to finish high school first
Amateur Lydia Ko, who made a name for herself in women’s golf by winning her first Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) title at the CN Canadian Women’s Open 2012, is being advice by avid golf fans that
what she should do next in her golfing career — but the young Kiwi has her own plans for the future.
Ko, who is currently the most talented player in amateur golf, surprised everyone last Sunday at the Vancouver Golf Club, as she clinched her maiden LPGA triumph at the CN Canadian Women’s Open, becoming the
youngest winner on the Tour.
Fans, critics and rivals have already started suggesting what the young prodigy is going to do in coming weeks. However, Ko has said in one of her interviews that she has no plans for joining professional golf
at the moment — a decision that may disappoint her admirers who have been impatiently to see the Kiwi star display her skills in pro events.
When asked what lies ahead, Ko said that her biggest concern right now is to finish high school, and then she will be in a position to give a serious thought to what she should be doing regarding her golfing
career in coming months.
Ko participated in the CN Canadian Women’s Open 2012 with a great vigour, but a single golf expert singled her out as a possible winner of the prestigious tournament. However, the rising star kept her rivals
in trouble throughout the four days of the event, posting a solid score to win her first LPGA title as an amateur.
Ko said that she never thought she would be able to outperform big names, but luckily, her game was good enough for her to maintain a considerable lead against all her rivals.
“I thought I was going to have an average performance, but I have confidence in my game and I was playing well,” she said of the battle at Vancouver Golf Club.
Ko was keen to point out that winning an LPGA tournament in Canada was not just about becoming the youngest winner, but she gained much-needed confidence by playing among top-ranked LPGA contenders.
“I played my game, and I won. It was very meaningful, because even though they didn't play as well as me, they were happy for me and they were very supportive of me all week".
