Lydia Ko wins New Zealand Women’s Stroke Play Championship – Golf News
Auckland native, Lydia Ko, did not have any trouble winning the Lion Foundation New Zealand Women’s Stroke-Play Championship. Taking place at the Russley Golf Club in Christchurch, the Stroke Play Championship provided an amazing platform for the participating
young stars. Ko, who is only turning fourteen tomorrow, added this win to the Srixon Australian Women’s Stroke play Championship she won at the Huntingdale Golf Club in March.
In both the events, Ko defeated Cecilia Cho to become the first golfer to have won both the New Zealand And Australian titles in the same year. Cecilia Cho is actually a good friend and a rival of Ko. In Australia, Ko’s victory was thanks to a narrow playoff
win but in this tournament, the talented player won by a margin of nine shots.
The talented girl entered the final round with a safe five shot lead and did not slip all throughout the tournament. Both Cho and Ko made an amazing game leaving the rest of the field behind, with third placed, Jayvie Agojo ten shots back.
Walking up to the eighteenth hole, Ko set up an amazing shot for an eagle and nailed it. That eagle on the last hole really put an exclamation mark to her amazing play. Ko later said that she really wanted to make a birdie on the 16th hole but
the eagle made up for it. The player said winning by nine shots is a lot but it wasn’t all that easy. The player actually lost the lead before the final round and worked hard to win by such an amazing margin.
"I played much better today and I felt really relaxed throughout the round," said Ko, who last month became just the fourth New Zealand female to win the equivalent Australian title. "The win in Aussie was pleasing because it was a very international field
and the competition was strong and I am happy to win by so many here."
The top 32 qualifiers from this event will qualify for the New Zealand Women’s Amateur Championship starting tomorrow morning at the same venue.
