Lydia Ko wins second McCormack Medal
Lydia Ko won her second consecutive McCormack Medal this year.
The medal was founded in 2011 and is given to the world’s number one woman’s amateur golfer. Lydia Ko won the medal last year when she topped the rankings for the women’s amateur players.
This year was almost a repeat of the last year’s performance. Ko won the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship in a tough match against the American player, Jaye Marie Green. The event was held at The Country Club in Cleveland, Ohio and drew a large crowd.
The last year’s award ceremony was held during the ISPS Handa Women's Australian Open early in the February of 2012.
The medal was given away by LPGA star and R&A Working for Golf Ambassador Suzann Pettersen. Pettersen, herself is an accomplished golfer who is the present world’s number six.
This year, Ko pulled the impossible. She led the world’s amateur rankings for an unbelievable 68 weeks and proved that she rightly deserves the McCormack Medal and related honours. She is also eligible for a place in the 2013 US Women’s Open.
Lydia Ko is very delighted with her medal. Talking about it, she said, “I'd like to thank the USGA and The R&A because without them, the ranking wouldn't be possible. It gets me to places where normal people can't go, and it's a great honour”.
Ko said that she intends to maintain her form and make sure that she achieves the medal for the third time in a row.
Talking about her medal streak she said, “It's pretty amazing. After I got the medal last year, I haven't lost the No. 1 position since then. I became World No. 1 on my birthday last year. It's good to continue it. I'll continue to get more invites to professional
events. It's always good to be World No. 1”.
Ko started golf at a young age and rose to prominence in amateur golf with her wins in the ALPG events. She moved up to the international amateur golf events and recorded a streak of victories that is unrivalled in the recent history.
She was the first player to win the 2011 Australian Ladies’ Stroke Play and the 2011 New Zealand Ladies’ Stroke Play championships at the same time.
