So i took ballet last year and it was my first year. I take jazz and was told that ballet helps technique, but i want to take lyrical this year, should i take it instead of ballet or do both because i'm not sure how similar they are?

  1. do both. ballet is dancing to the rhythm and beat  and music  but lyrical is dancing to the lyrics. ballet is to help with all your other classes.

  2. Take lyrical because lyrical is a mixture of ballet and jazz because its more technical!

    HAVE FUN =]

  3. lyrical is strongly influenced by ballet. without ballet, lyrical will be very hard for you. almost all of the steps come from ballet- just to sum it up

  4. whatever you do...never quit ballet because it really does help you. even some hip hoppers do it and its good for gymnastics and piano...its good for everything. personally, i like jazz better than lyrical, but i don't know what you like so just make the best decision based on your circumstances

  5. Well, I'm a dancer. I take all sorts of dance. As you can imagine, both ballet and lyrical are thrown into that mix.

It all depends on what kind of dance you like to do. Both of these styles take technique. If you are really into lyrical I'd suggest taking both. The ballet technique that you'd be learning would help with the lyrical training you love. Well, that's if you love lyrical. Since you haven't been taking either for long you might not know what you love more. Lyrical shows your personality and character more. It's a combination of jazz and ballet. And you already know about ballet because you've taken it.

Ballet and lyrical will share some of the same moves. Ballet will give you technique and ability to master lyrical. Lyrical will allow you to "feel" ballet more. I can assure that you won't be bored doing both. Each style of dance has its own feel. I've never walked out of a ballet class saying, "Ugh, that class was so much like my lyrical one yesterday."

So, all in all I'd suggest taking both. I've talked about the benefits of taking both. But, if you don't think you're ready to take on the responsibility then I'd recommend ballet. You can always take lyrical when you are a little older. That style will "wait" for you. With ballet I think it's best to get the basics when you are younger.

If you can, keep up with the jazz if you like it. It will help with your leaps and that aspect of both ballet and lyrical.

    Best of luck!
