Márton Fülöp moves to Ipswich Town
Goalkeeper Márton Fülöp has completed his move from English Premier League outfit Sunderland to Football League Championship Club Ipswich Town. The 27-year-old has signed a two-year deal and will be available for the Championship league kick-off on Saturday against Middlesbrough.
With the Tractor Boys targeting promotion to the EPL this season, the Hungarian international has once more linked up with Roy Keane after being impressed by what his former manager at Sunderland had to say.
Fülöp told his new club’s official website that: "I have come down from a Premier League club but my target is to get back playing at that level and that why I have joined a team like Ipswich. Hopefully we can have a good season and at the end of it, be at the top of the table. That is my target and the target for everyone here.”
Emergency loan cover
With Scottish international Craig Gordon being manager Steve Bruce’s first-choice goalkeeper at Sunderland, Fülöp found first-team opportunities hard to come by at the Stadium of Light. Towards the end of the 2009-10 season, he was recruited by Manchester City on an emergency loan and made three appearances for that team as Shay Given and Stuart Taylor were both out injured.
Fülöp was also sent out on loan to Leicester City and Stoke City in his three-and-a-half years with Sunderland. He helped them win the Championship title and with it promotion to the top flight in the 2006-07 season. Fülöp also played a key role in keeping the club in the EPL at the tail-end of the 2008-09 season. In total, he made 45 appearances with the North East side.
Meanwhile, with Gordon sidelined after suffering a fractured wrist, Fülöp’s move leaves Bruce short of goalkeepers. He has approached Manchester City over the possibility of taking Joe Hart on loan while Gordon recovers from his injury.
