M Gustav Firdaus overpowers Ari Januari to enter into Men’s Singles quarter-final at Jakarta Open
Indonesia’s M Gustav Firdaus put up stunning show as he reached into Men’s Singles quarter-final after thrashing the higher ranked Ari Januari in round-of-16 contest at the Djarum Sirnas Flypower Jakarta Open 2012 on Friday, May 18, in Indonesia.
Gustav, who is seeded at number 10 in Men’s Singles main draw in the tournament, put up superb performance when he stunned the second seeded Januari in an emphatic fashion.
The lower ranked Gustav surprised everyone by playing flawless badminton and ended up this fight in straight sets by taking 55 minutes in the court.
On the other hand, the higher ranked Januari failed to continue his impressive run in the tournament as he could not live up to expectations and crashed out in the pre-quarter-final stage without showing strong resistance.
In the first set, both shuttlers played top quality badminton while remained close on the board at the initial stage.
The second seeded Januari tried his best to get the charge of rallies but failed to dictate and pace and remained struggling in taking the bird early.
In the meanwhile, Gustav remained composed in the court and took an impressive lead until the one-minute break in the first game.
After the break, Gustav continued his stunning performance in the court as he did not show any mercy to his higher ranked compatriot and wrapped up opening set with a tremendous score of 21-17.
In the second game, Januari lifted up his level of play and executed impressive shots but failed to take advantage as his lower ranked opponent was also playing safe and positive badminton.
Until the interval in the second set, both shuttlers were close on the score board.
After the break, they continued playing composed and attacking badminton and reached at the concluding phase of second game.
The score was 20-20 when the lower ranked Gustav showed his elevated class in the court and remained successful in taking ending points to wrap up the second set with a tight 22-20 score on the board.
Gustav emerged as the winner in this two-set pre-quarter-final encounter with a margin of 21-17 and 22-20.
