M Kilduff wins Boys 400m freestyle title: Day one – 2011 Australian Age Multi Class Championships
M Kilduff of SLC Aquadot claimed the title of 400m freestyle in 11-15 years old category on first day of the 2011 Australian Age Multi Class Championships. The session completed on Friday, October 7, at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), in Canberra.
Kilduff proved his dominance for the crown of the mediocre distance freestyle swim in the S6 - S16 multi-class category. The 15-year-old champion went rampant in the eight-lap discipline and kept his competitors at a prominent distance for gold medal.
With his gruelling efforts and amazing strategy, Kilduff had no trouble in acquiring the crown of the event, as no swimmer was able to get into his reach throughout the 400m race. He completed his swim in a nice time of 4 minutes and 29.90 seconds for gold
medal, which was 0.23 seconds better than his seedtime. Kilduff had a magnificent start, which earned him a lead of 2.23 seconds over his subsequent competitor, R Crothers, who has the disability level of S9.
As the race continued, Kilduff kept on enhancing his lead over Crothers. He lengthened his lead to nearly three seconds over Crothers in the first round, four in second round, five in third and hit the wall with a lead of almost seven seconds to claim the
gold medal.
After Kilduff’s dominating effort, the arena witnessed Albany Creek’s Crothers, who clocked a time of 4 minutes and 36.55 seconds for silver medal of the event. The silver medallist devastated the hopes of Warringah Aquatics’ Oli Cox by keeping him away
with a lead of almost nineteen seconds.
The 14-year-old Cox faced a strong challenge from his closest rival, McGuigan of Mornington, but managed to out-touch him on the finishing end with an effort of 4 minutes and 55.37 seconds for bronze medal. In the meantime, McGuigan remained nearly one second
away and settled on the finishing wall as the fourth finisher, posting 4 minutes and 56.92 seconds.
Furthermore, the championship will conclude on October 9 after the conclusion of all scheduled events.
