  1. You can either go with this outfit http://www.kiwiexperience.com/, or copy one or more of their itineraries and you should see a lot of New Zealand.

Other great sites to help with trip planning to New Zealand are:

    http://www.newzealand.com/travel/

    http://www.aaguides.co.nz/main/index.sht...

    http://www.airnewzealand.com/gateway.jsp

Also, If you are a member of the AAA in the USA you can sign up with a sister-relationship membership with the AA in New Zealand ahead of your trip and have them send you their travel quides and maps and you are also then eligible for discounted car rental rates, discounted accomodation rates and discounted rates at many sight seeing activities. See: http://www.aa.co.nz/Section?Action=View&...

  2. Depends on how much time you have. If you only have a small amount of time, my favorite places are...

North Island: Coromandel Peninsula, Waitomo, and Welly.

South Island: FIORDLAND NATIONAL PARK(!!!), Abel Tasman National Park, Dunedin, the Arthur's Pass drive between Greymouth and Christchurch, and the West Coast (Punakaiki to the glaciers).

Basically I'm in love with the South Island. The NI is nice, too, but the SI has that magical something that keeps me coming back for more.

Definitely pick up the Lonely Planet. Also: will you be driving between the islands? You can take a car ferry between Welly and Picton, AND many rental companies will let you- for example- pick up in Auckland and drop off in Chch (or wherever to wherever. That way if you want to save time you can fly into Auckland, drive through the NI, around the SI, then drop off in Chch and take an hour or so flight back up to AKL the day you leave. Just make sure you ask- sometimes they have a one-way fee. Have fun!!

  3. The Lonely Plant guide for NZ is actually very good.  It will become your bible.

  4. Strongly agree with Gold_Nugget.

    For the real experiance,

    AVOID QUEENSTOWN!!!

    Go mainly to South Is.
