  1. I think the better MMA fighters have a solid foundation in one traditional discipline such as karate or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and then incorporate the principles of "MMA".

Guys like Chuck Liddell (Kempo Karate), Georges St. Pierre (Kyokushin Karate), Cung Le (Tae Kwon Do, San Shou), Royce Gracie (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu),  Matt Hughes (Wrestling), Anderson Silva (Tae Kwon Do & Muay Thai), Karo Paryisan (Judo) fall into that category.

These guys all have a solid foundation or "base" art.

I think guys that start out in straight "MMA" are at a disadvantage.  Because they only learn small bits in pieces of boxing, Muay Thai, and Wrestling, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

They don't have the in depth technical ability that a black belt might have, and they usually never get it because they only train in the most basic and effective methods, they never learn the more advanced tactics and concepts.

The MMA school I train at offers classes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Gi & No Gi on separate nights), and MMA beginner and MMA advanced.

The Jiu-Jitsu classes are just Jiu-Jitsu, not in the context of MMA.

The MMA classes have alot of No Gi Jiu-Jistu, a little boxing, a little Muay Thai, a little Judo and a little wrestling.  But not enough of everything.

I am lucky that I have a ton of martial arts experience and also train Tae Kwon Do full time.  It makes a huge difference in muscle memory, speed, experience, reaction, balance and power.

    Good luck.

    James

  2. most MMA gyms will have your basic standup (boxing, muay thai) and your basic ground (wrestling, jiu jitsu) some will throw in karate, and judo. It depends on the quality of the school and teachers.

  3. MMA is mixed martial arts.  It means there's a whole mix of them.  Any and all of them.  If you take an MMA class what you learn will depend on the style of the instructor.  It's not fixed.

  4. Your misunderstanding it.

MMA is not like a "buffet" where everyday they teach you a new martial art. MMA is a sport  It stands for Mixed Martial Arts.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mixed_marti...

It is a full contact sport that draws from many fighting styles to aid one in winning a match within the parameters set by the rules.

Meaning that training in mma is very unique to an individual. your style will be unique to you in aiding you overall strategy-also called your "game" amongst enthusiasts. You will be training for the ring. Not real life, not battlfield combat, simply for the ring- its a sport. Everything you do however, is a shadow of some kind of martial art. Even the training.

Eg.) wrestlers are good at takedowns.- so you will learn some wrestling.

Wrestlers also do the ironman (you keep wrestling one guy till you win, then immediatly switch out to another guy until you beat 5 guys)- that kind of conditioning helps anaerobic respiration

muay thai people use the elbows and knees to dominate in the clinch.

But muay thai people condition with hard body training to make you more durable

boxers train on speed bags for accuracy

they also typically shadow box and pracitce on a bag.

You will draw upon all of these and more INLuding judo. BUT ONE THING TO NOTE IS. your drawing upon all these martial arts but with a modified touch.

Eg. Youll train judo- but without the gi.

Youll train boxing, but be prepared to avoid a takedown

youll train wrestling, but be prepared to do a takedown without exposing a part of yourself to a submission.

In other words. MMA is a special conglomorete of all martial arts moves from ANY style that ARE LEGAL in competion and come most naturally to you and are effective...wow that was a hige runon.

You;ll find all the martial arts you speak of and more. HOWEVER do note, that allthough your training mma it will not necccesarily make you good at each of those arts independently.

Eg. You wont be that great at judo because the gi is very important and changes everything to them. However you'll be much better than a begginer

MMA moves, are martial arts moves that are modified for maximum effectivenes in a competion ring setting.

I hope this answers your question.

    please rate dont hate

    thanks
