Question:

MAC Address Creating Problems?

by  |  earlier

I have two computers on the same LAN with the same MAC (the MAC of the network cards). The IP addresses are different, but it seems like the MAC problem is causing an extreme performance decline. I also sometimes lose connection to the internet on both computers. Since MAC address spoofing is not an option, what can I do to solve this problem?

  1. It's impossible to have identical factory MAC addresses, these are unique and given during manufacturing. If you have this then something has gone terribly wrong at the factory.

To check your MAC address click "Start", choose "Run...", type CMD and click OK, then type " ipconfig /all " in the Command Prompt window that appears. The number under physical address is the MAC address.

To spoof it click "Start", choose "Run...", type REGEDIT,go to HKEY-LOCAL MACHINE/ SYSTEM/ CurrentControlSet/ Control/ Class/ {4d36e972- ...}/ 0001/ on the right panel right click and New/ string value/ type NetworkAddress/  right click on it and Modify/ in Value Data put another MAC

  2. You never want to have the same MAC address on the same physical network -- the network link will become unstable.  Make sure each device has its own MAC (even if you clone them to different addresses)

  3. Why isn't MAC address changing an option?? Manufacturers realised years ago they would run out of addresses. Go to the card manufacturer web site and download the tool to change one of them.

IP addresses relate to a MAC address in the low level network much like DNS translate www.site.com into an IP address.

You network will NEVER be stable until you change one of the MAC addresses.
