MAJOR mineral deposits in tub?

Hello - I just moved into a home and the tub is disgusting. There are major mineral deposits on it. I've tried industrial cleaner, CLR, The Works, everything. Is there something else I can use? Or is there a way to scrape it off without damaging the tub? Does anyone have any ideas?

Most solids in tubs are calcium and magnesium salts. These usually respond well to acids. If the tub is porcelain there is little chemical harm from any product except HF. Solvent green is often used. Strong acids are NOT recommended as they will NOT be goo for the drainage system. I use the "green" wiry plastic scrub pads and sometimes an old single edge safety razor blade for the thick stubborn stuff.

If your problem is silica (like most of mine is), then the only thing I have been able to do is scrap with the razor blade and buff.

I have never had BAD deposits, so I don't know if this will completely work for you.  Get some Borax (in the laundry section at grocery store) and a big bottle of plain white vinegar.  Make a paste with the borax and vinegar and rub it into the problem areas. Put a nice thick paste on it.  Let it sit for about 4 hours and hopefully that will dissolve a lot of it.  I have also heard of using lemon juice instead of vinegar.  They are both acidic, but I use vinegar to clean a lot of stuff around the house.  When you are ready to scrub, use a nylon scrubber.  You can also sprinkle some salt on the areas when you are ready to scrub.  Salt is a mild abrasive that shouldn't hurt the tub.   You might have to do this a couple of times.
