Question:

MALTHOUSE, why is his coaching being QUESTIONED ?

He is the only coach to have BEATEN Geelong this season, lost to them by 5 pts in prelim final , and by 16pts home and away '07, and beat them by 106pts in '06. He has won 2 flags at West Coast , had Collingwood in 2 grand finals, with basic ordinary teams, and beat the 2 previous premiers and grand finalist's to reach Prelim final last year. This season he is currently without Rocca, Rusling , Fraser, Prestigiacomo, Holland, Lonie, Reid, all out injured, and still has the Magpies in the 8.

I would be more inclined to question WORSFOLD,who has taken his club to the bottom, after that nail biting tie against the Pies in last years finals. Grey hair and the arrival of a grandchild should not effect your EXPERIENCE, and being appointed Australian coach suggests the AFL respects his credentials, or does it have something to do with the luck of the Irish.

  1. **I don't disagree with you that Malthouse is a good coach because he is and he's been a success coach so I don't think that has ever been in question.

I think he's being questioned because he hasn't done more with the team that he has.  It seems like Collingwood's only claim to fame this year was beating Geelong and Mick himself said after the game that Collingwood aren't 80 odd points better than Geelong.

I also agree with your point of why Worsfold hasn't been questioned yet because West Coast seem to be one of the biggest disappointments (along with Port Adelaide) that have come out of this year.**

  2. His coaching is being questioned because he is a dinosaur.

I wish the club would hurry up & give him the heave-ho as his miserable whinging nature is having an affect on the players. They are not a happy group any more.

We have to get rid of him & get someone who can relate to the players, such as the Dons & Hawks have done in recent years.

  3. If your team is consistently in the finals after the first 2 years, then the coach is doing ok.

Worry about the coaches of teams that have occupy the bottom half of the ladder on a regular basis. Terry Wallace is a classic example. If he was going to do something, he would have done it by now.

Mick may say some strange things every now and then, but there are worse coaches than him.

  4. well firstly..

i do agree with u in some parts of ur very long question...

but beating geelong in '06 is no extraordinary accomplishment.. they came 10th or somethin

and this year it was a bad day 4 geelong and a good day 4 pies..

i havent seen cats play like they did against pies this year again and this is the same 4 the pies...

they havent played that well since...

pies r defs not a 6+goal better team than cats and malthouse said that himself.. also..

lions beat pies by 2 points.. does this make lions a better team than geelong?? i think not...

or bombers 4 that matter?? DEFINITELY NOT!!!

although i agree with the worsfold comment.. got to go!!

and the grey hair + grandchildren... doesnt make him a better coach and it doesnt make him a worse coach...

but maybe the grey hair comes from the coaching?? haha

  5. Yes yes yes .... Malthouse like Pagan before him invented a whole different way of playing and deserves credit for that.  Truth be known it was probably the entire coaching staff at WCE who did this.

His approach was basically to congregate in the middle when defending and force wide and when his (vastly superior) half back line got the ball, or when there was a kick in to spread very quickly and work the ball down the flanks very fast.  Players would spread as the ball approached and rely on being quicker than the other team.  This went against the wisdom of the time and is very hard to counter.  It worked particularly well against teams who focus too much on the centre corridor.

The two things I see missing from Micky that make me think he's past it are:

    1) Flexibility - guys like Bomber, Sheeds and even Rocket recognise when their plan is failing.  Micky's approach worked against the Cats but no-one else.  The Cats play a very different game to everyone else!

    2) Stateman like attributes.  Micky makes excuse after excuse and cant keep his mouth shut.

At WCE Mick had an amazing team.  WA had always produced great players and here was their chance to play at home with favourable draft conditions from the new AFL that they simply didn't need.  Look at the legends he had Mateira ++, Sumich, Jakovich, Cousins, Worsfold, the other guy who topped himself etc etc.

Mick may be the only coach to have beaten Geelong but he's lost 7 games .... Bomber (soon to be renamed Cat) has lost one.  Better coach is ....???

  6. I ABSOLUTELY AND TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU.  HE IS A GREAT COACH.

  7. I am happy to answer questions.........whether they be asked by a fool or not!

Mick Malthouse's coaching skills have been the subject to question for many a year. He coached WCE to two premierships - with a playing list that any other coach would would surely have achieved double the result!

Steady Eddie head-hunted him from the Eagles thinking he was to be the next messiah of the Pies. He has had, what many people claim to be...the richest club; the best training facilities; top playing lists; untold money etc etc......& what has he achieved in 8-9 years.....NOTHING!!!

He is the biggest failure in recent AFL history. Anyone who can't see this; or can't see that the game has passed him by; that he is too old.....is nothing but an ill-informed one-eyed supporter wearing blinkers!

Mick whinges, whines, complains & wants rule changes to cover his inadequancies. He will soon be given the flick by Collingwood........nothing surer. If they don't, they will slide further down the ladder.

Ta ta Mick................You will go down as an under achiever.

  8. Malthouse has done very well to stay the collingwood coach for so long. However he needs to change the game play of the pies to ensure more success at the club. After a couple of appropriate draft picks the pies could only go up. They have the talent but they need younger players to make sure collingwood is successful in the future.

  9. Gee, what's this! Collingwood supporters happy to be just a  finals contender, you must all be getting old! Mick has been and still is a good coach, no doubt, but everybody needs a change of scenery now and then, and I reckon it would do both side good if he moved on, I reckon the pies are underperformers, he has perservered with Rocca way to long and if Eddie was not running the world, er sorry Collingwood he well may have gone by now

  10. Mick is one of the best coaches in the AFL, so what if his team isnt travelling too well atm, at least he can admit that. he knows which areas to work on in the team and they are getting there. The Pies are an awesome team and i know they can make the finals. Go Pies!

  11. yes i agree, he gets pointed out for not performing and all that although he doesn't have clement, buckley and lica who retired last year he is doing an excellent job and he is the all-australian coach so that much say somethging as well. good job in pointing all this out. and well done on the pies for beating geelong this year

  12. I totally agree with what you have said deeds, and the first 3 answers here (sorry Quandry, have to disagree with you on this one mate).

How on earth anyone can say Malthouse has been bad for Collingwood or is past his used by date is beyond me...all the stats you have provided above clearly outline his success and his continual improvements to the coaching and playing strategies over the past 5 years prove he is innovative and not stuck in the past like some other coaches.

Just for once, I wish people would take off their "I hate Collingwood/Malthouse/Eddie" blinkers and realise what Mick has done for the club, and what he will do in the future.

  13. OK so I am a fool for voicing an opinion different from the questioner.

It's not about what he's done, it's about repeat failures and prospects for the future. The longer a person remains in a position of power in an organisation, the more he believes he is indispensable, and the more it is seen within the organisation that he has failed, a la Sheedy. The doubts about Mick are coming to the surface. Leigh Matthews has a better record and he got Collingwood a flag. Why did he go? And then got 3 consecutive flags for Brissy.

In the West, Mick had the benefit of talent derived from preferential draft picks (as did Leigh). Leigh has a better record as a champion player, and thus greater respect from his team. This is what Bucks can bring to Collingwood. Mick's had his time - done well, but not well enough.

  14. Malthouse is going to go dows as one of the best coaches in AFL history..........face it

  15. At the risk of appearing foolish I would like to draw your attention to a recently redundant coach with greater accolades.

                                        KEVIN SHEEDY

    You work it out!

  16. He'd do better at driving a coach, full of pensioners, than he is doing at trying to coach a football team!

  17. I find it more amazing that those questioning Malthouse as a coach are being questioned.

It's as plain as the nose on your face that Mick Malthouse is a total failure. For supporters to be satisfied with just making the eight is beyond belief.

  18. Hey, asker, you've asked people not to answer if they are a fool. I've seen some ignoring this request - several Collingwood supporters.! I hope you heed your own words & don't award one of them with the best answer.

Mick Malthouse is well & truely past his use by date. How long can a club keep a coach who is not producing the goods?

Every years the Pies prattle on about how good their playing list is - & every year they go bum up! Get rid of the whinging cry-baby before he does more damage.

    RR = Y C S M D

  19. Malthouse is a good coach the coach can only do so much it is up to the players to implement the instructions given in the match and Collingwood has to win the games that they should not lose they are very close to missing out on finals altogether

  20. Malthouse has done very well the the players he has

  21. YOU ARE TOTALLY RIGHT A GOOD PLAYERS ARE OUT AND HE STILL MANAGERS TO PULL A GOOD TEAM TOGETHER AND BRING THEM INTO THE 8 WITH A TOP 4 CONTENTION THEY COULD BE FOURTH BY THE END OF THE SEASON

  22. Because he missed the boat.

Pagan & Sheedy were given the boot because they fell behind modern coaching trends. Mick is surely the next to go.

Did you read Robert Walls' column during the week. He came out & put it into print that Mick had fallen behind. I agreed with every word that Walls wrote - & I give Walls more credit in regard to football knowledge than I do for most people who post in here!

  23. I have no problem with malthouse - he did after all coach WCE to 2 premierships. I think what most people question is the inconsistancy of Collingwood which is possibly just a tad unfair. More to do,I think, with the good old Collingwood bashing.

As for questioning Worsfold - he has had a whole lot more to deal with than a few injuries. No offense to the Collingwood guys mentioned, but they (apart from Buckley) are really not in the same league as Cuzzy & Judd.

And also, Quandry, please don't refer to Chris Mainwaring as "the guy who topped himself". He was one of the greats, not only with WCE but AFL in general and I think he deserves a bit more respect than that. Cheers!

  24. I agree with you, and I agree with what Scotty Burns has said: Malthouse may be older, but he has adapted with the game, and has learnt new techniques throughout his coaching career.

Malthouse has done a fantastic job at Collingwood. He brought a team from the Wooden Spoon team, to a grand finalist team, in a matter of three years.

People may be questioning Mick because Collingwood seem to get so close, but they waste opportunities. This is up to the players, and Mick has coached the team as much as he can, there isn't much else he can do, and you can't blame the team's form slump on him.

Nothing is going to change at Collingwood if you change the coach. We have a list with great potential, and Malthouse has recruited very well.

I say Malthouse is a great coach, and he has done a great job in previous years. Who knows if change is what is needed at Pie Land? All I know, is that Mick has been great for the club.
