  1. Secretariat or Affirmed, but Smart Jones was also something.

In Europe, Mill Reef, Nijinsky and Dancing Brave.

It's really hard to pin the title best, the above horses I like, but I would rate very very good but not the best ever.

  2. I don't think anyone could answer that question and be "right"

Everyone has their favourites, there are different distances, countries and ages.

You could easily have an arguement>

person a "Secretariat won the Belmont by 31 lenghts."

person b "Well, Posiedon won a Melbourne Cup and was  undefeated."

    See, easy.

Everyone has their own ideas about the greatest of all time. All you can do is form your own opinion, and take other's into account.

  3. he has his own place at the Kentucky horse park along with the other greats.

  4. "Greatest racehorse of all time" is a very difficult thing to decide.  There are too many variables to consider: the best on turf, the best on dirt, the best sprinter, the best miler, the best stayer, the best hurdler, the best chaser, etc.  On top of that you need to think about what "the greatest" means to you.  To a lot of people it is not about the money the horse has won or how many Group 1 races they acheived, but about the bravery and battling qualities the horse has.  For a true display of bravery try to watch the 2002 running of the Jockey Club Cup at Newmarket - Persian Punch just refused to give in and received a standing ovation when returning to the winners enclosure.

There have been thousands of excellent horses over the 250 odd years that we have been racing and to pick just one would do a great diservice to the many others.

A few years ago the Racing Post ran a poll of their readers and asked them to vote for their favourite racehorses of all time.  Granted, most people were really only considering European horses but their top 10 horses were:

    1. Arkle

    2. Desert Orchid

    3. Red Rum

    4. Istabraq

    5. Brigadier Gerard

    6. One Man

    7. Persian Punch

    8. Dancing Brave

    9. Sea Pigeon

    10. Nijinksy

I own a very good book called "A Century of Champions".  It lists what are considered the best horses/sires/owners/jockeys etc of the 20th Century.  Their Top 10 Flat horses in the World (lets be honest, most Americans will not have heard of many of the "jump" horses!) is as follows:

    1. Sea Bird

    2. Secretariat

    3. Ribot

    4. Brigadier Gerard

    5. Citation

    6. Hyperion

    7. Tudor Minstrel

    8. Mill Reef

    9. Spectacular Bid

    10. Bayardo

They rank Man o War as the 21st best flat horse in the world (7th best American horse) with (as well those in the top 10) Seattle Slew, Native Dancer and Affirmed considered his superior.

Personally, I have far too many favourites to pick the "greatest".  I'll enjoy hearing everyone else's opinions though!

  5. NO! barbaro and Ruffian were...barbaro just couldnt have the chance to proove it. he would have stayed undefeated and won the triple crown...

  6. Well, I admit Secretariat's 31 length Belmont victory is impressive. However, Man O'War beat a horse named Hoodwink in the Lawrence Realization Stakes by 100 lengths and set a world record in the process!

  7. go to you tube, and watch the tapes of

Secretariat...he was and will always be

the greatest....he won by 31 lenghts...
