  1. makefire... is wrong the fool is looking on the wrong side of the ='s sign

  2. Let

    H = number of horses

    C = number of cows

    D = number of ducks

    H + C + D = 272 ==> Eq. 1

    80H = Cost of the horses

    135C = cost of cows

    3D = cost of ducks

    80H + 135C + 3D = 12 869 ==> Eq. 2

    =====================

    One more detail is missing.

    A third equation must exist.

    Check your problem carefully.

  3. Unfortunately that is not a correct answer as

    89+10+18 does not equal 272.

  4. There are a number of possible solutions, here's one:

    89 Cows = 12,015

    10 Horses = 800

    18 Ducks = 54

                    =12,869
