MBBC Jr. International: Chad Naramore, Shawn Whong become Under-19 Boy’s Doubles Champions
The scratch pair of Chad Naramore-Shawn Whong fetched the Under-19 Boy’s Doubles trophy for USA by overpowering Jevon Gaskin-Johannes Hagen in final round of MBBC Jr. International on July 20, 2012.
Though, the champs wrapped the tussle in just two sets but still they had to put an extra effort to unseat the opponents with 24-22 and 21-10 margin.
This game for the throne was played at Manhattan Beach in California, USA and a huge crowd assembled to watch the native shuttlers landing on the podium.
The twosome of Jevon and Johannes, who teamed up especially for this event, could not withstand the pressure and knelt down in both sets of the match.
They started their campaign in a decent manner and alarmed their challengers by clinching four valuable points in the beginning of first set.
They were enjoying upper hand at 7-4 score position when couple of fatal mistakes brought them down. They dropped few crucial points and allowed their rivals to bounce back.
Chad and Shawn did not squander this opportunity and grabbed couple of uninterrupted points to reach at respectable position of 11-10 before the interval.
However, best part of the game was yet to come as both teams made this contest memorable with their splendid performance in the second half.
They remained toe-to-toe and did not allow each other to gain a comfortable advantage until the final stage.
The US shuttlers showed some spark by raising their total to 15-12 but their supremacy was short lived as the opposing team counter-balanced the situation with four consecutive points.
Jevon and Johannes, who belong to Barbados and Norway respectively, pushed their competitors on the back-foot but they could not maintain this rhythm in final moments and faced a 22-24 defeat.
This severe blow broke their backs and they could not rise in the following set which turned into decider later.
On the other hand, Chad and Shawn utilised their confidence and swept the table in an impressive manner.
They finished first half with a mountainous total of 11-5 and then capitalised this initial lead in second half of the set. They claimed the crown in home event by putting a convincing margin of 21-10.
