MBBC Jr. International: Katherine Toscano influences Gina Alfandary in Girl’s Singles group match
Guatemala’s talented shuttler Katherine Toscano Lopez intercepted Gina Alfandary in Group B match to move into semi-finals of Girl’s Singles Under-22 category in MBBC Jr. International on July 18, 2012.
This quarter-final tussle, staged in Manhattan, USA was resolved with 21-19, 16-21 and 21-17 scores after three exhausting sets.
Both players snapped at each other’s heels throughout this crucial match but finally Katherine locked the honour by prevailing in the opening and closing games.
On the other hand, Gina Alfandary disappointed the local crowd by kneeling down in a disgraceful manner.
Now, the victorious contender will lock horns with Group A winner in the semi-final round of the event.
The Guatemala campaigner has alarmed all the contestants with a staggering performance in Group B match which doubled as a quarter-final contest.
Katherine Toscano laid the foundation of her victory by grabbing the very first match point. She gained an early advantage and then maintained this slight edge all the way to the final moments.
In the first half, she prevailed in four consecutive rallies and reached at dominating position of 7-3. She did not squander this effort and raised her total to 11-6 before the interval.
Later part of the game was full of drama as the American shuttler made swift progress and narrowed the gap with 11-13.
The young but spirited Gina gave her challenger a tough time but then she could not withstand an intensive campaign of opposing player and surrendered after reading 19-21 margin.
However, she did not remain at the lower end permanently and managed to rise on her toes in the very next set. This time she played with the right attitude and outclassed Katherine in all areas of the game.
She started the beating from the very first stroke and kept her rival under control until game point situation. Gina Alfandary registered a distinctive figure of 21-16 and setup a nerve-racking decider.
Both contenders made every effort to oust the other in third set and they remained toe-to-toe in most part of the game.
Though, Katherine Toscano struggled to establish a comfortable lead but she struck hard in crucial moments and sealed the triumph with an overwhelming score of 21-17.
