MBBC Jr. International: Marie Waland sends Rochelle Ng packing in Girl’s Singles title match
Norway’s Marie Waland continued her successful run and stayed invincible in title match of Girl’s Singles Under-19 category of MBBC Jr. International on Thursday, July 19, 2012.
The second seeded shuttler stamped Rochelle Ng by registering an overwhelming total of 21-23, 21-18 and 21-16.
However, it was not a smooth sailing as she had to face immense resistance not only from the opponent but also from local crowd which assembled at Manhattan Beach, California, USA.
Marie Waland took some time to get settled as she lost the very first game but then she recovered from this blow and cast away her challenger in the last two sets.
On the other hand, the native female shuttler disappointed her supporters with a below par performance in crucial moments.
Rochelle Ng, who was holding sixth position in tournament ranking, aroused hopes by surviving a neck-and-neck tussle straight away in opening game.
The US player was a bit sluggish in the start and dropped a few valuable points but she set the overall pace of game by prevailing in three consecutive rallies after 3-5.
She kept on moving forward slowly but steadily and finished first half with a slight edge in 11-10 total.
Though, she lost her grip immediately after one-minute break and allowed her competitor to reach a dominating position of 16-14. She regained her dominance in final stage and managed to place a favourable margin of 23-21.
The Norwegian campaigner did not panic after first set loss and counterbalanced the situation by grabbing the very next match point.
This time, Marie Waland employed interesting strategy as many times she pushed the opposing shuttler on the back-foot with a power packed campaign and then bagged valuable points with drop net shots.
She put respectable figure of 11-8 before the interval and then magnified the impact by registering a winning score of 21-18.
The decider proved a dead contest in the second half as the local shuttler could not live up to the expectations and crashed out.
In first half, both contenders strived hard to gain a comfortable lead but remained close until 11-10.
However, Marie made the difference after the break to claim the crown with a striking knock of 21-16.
