MBBC Jr International: Ruben Castellanos stuns Brandon Alvarado to claim Boy’s Singles U17 title
Guatemala’s Ruben Castellanos displayed his elevated skills and nailed Boy’s Singles U17 title after proving his class over his higher ranked compatriot Brandon Alvarado in the final contest at the 2012 MBBC Jr International in USA, on Friday, July 20.
The un-seeded Castellanos, who remained impressive in all of his encounters in the Boy’s Singles U17 category in the championship, continued his powerful performance in the title match when he outplayed Alvarado who was the fourth seed in main draw.
Castellanos was too strong on court for his team-mate as he played tremendous badminton without making errors and easily wrapped up a comprehensive victory by ending up the match in straight sets with an incredible margin.
In the meanwhile, Alvarado failed to show his brilliance anymore as he could not maintain his rhythm on court which contesting against his lower ranked country-mate and eventually lost the fight with a humiliating difference on the board.
The opening game was surprising for the crowd and shocking for Alvarado as the lower ranked Castellanos played to his maximum potential and remained successful in taking a wonderful lead at the early stage.
The in-form Castellanos was impressive on court and he took a staggering lead until the end of opening half.
After the break, Castellanos played in the similar fashion as he did not let the pace of rallies down at any stage and easily won the set with a huge 21-6 margin on the score board.
In the second game, Alvarado gave a good fight at the initial stage as he matched the pace of rallies but failed to stop the steady progress of his lower ranked opponent who was flawless in his play.
Until the mid-game interval, Castellanos remained successful in getting a strong position by taking a good lead.
After the interval, Castellanos continued his killing performance against his compatriot without showing him any mercy all the way in concluding half.
The spirited Castellanos remained on course and bagged the second set with a seven-point margin of 21-14.
Castellanos won the Boy’s Singles crown after defeating Alvarado in straight games with a huge margin of 21-6 and 21-14.
