Question:

MBD in bearded dragons? =(?

I've had my 2 baby bearded dragons for about 2 months now and I know they have the begining stages of MBD. I wasn't able to get fixtures/bulbs that have UVB in them and I've had to wait FOREVER to get them (paychecks / mail delivery wasn't workin' to well with me! Grr!). I just got what they needed yesterday and today. Thank goodness! The thing I'm wondering though, is it normal for them to stare up at the lights at first? I know 'stargazing' is a sign of MBD, but they never did that until AFTER I installed the UVB lights. Are they going to be ok? I feel terrible for them. =(

  1. if you didnt have the uvb then you couldve taken them outside for pure sunlight for 20 mins.

what brand of uvb did you buy? reptiGLO 10.0 and compacts (spirally ones) are bad for them. Who in their right mind would make a light for pets that are bad for them? well these companies only care bout money.

sometimes they are curious about the lights, give it some time to adjust.  do you have a heat lamp?

a visit to a CERTIFIED reptile vet might be in order if they do show more signs of MBD

are you supplementing with pure calcium powder?

powder is to be D3 and phosphorus FREE.

though they can have a dusting of calcium with D3 once or twice a month. this is cause if they have too much D3 itsl ike MBD, but too much of it.

  2. It is normal for them to look at the lights.  Hopefully it is not too late and they don't have MBD yet.  Just make sure the bulbs are within 12 inches of their basking spot.  These bulbs lose potency long before the visible light gives out so they should be replaced every 6 months.  Continue to dust insects with a calcium/D3 powder every feeding for now.   MBD can be reversed or stopped with proper care if it hasn't progressed too far.  Also, since UVB cannot penetrate glass or plastic, make sure there isn't any barrier between the bulb and lizard!  Some fixtures come with a plastic "shield" which must be removed.
