MCA assures Wankhede Stadium will be available to stage 2011 World Cup fixtures
The http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 Cricket Association (MCA) is confident that the under-reconstruction Wankhede Stadium would be available to host the fixtures of next year’s ICC Cricket World Cup, one of the mega sporting events in the World.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 will jointly host the 2011 World Cup and constructions and renovations on a large scale are in progress to make it a successful and memorable event in the
history of sports.
Being one of the venues for the 2011 Cricket World Cup, Wankhede is also undergoing a renovation project. Due to the reconstruction work at the stadium, the Ranji trophy clash between Mumbai and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Assam-c765 was shifted to Bandra Kurla Complex.
But the MCA has assured the development project would not cause any hindrance in hosting the mega event next year.
“Almost 80-85 per cent of the work is over. Work on the outfield too has been completed by almost 90 per cent. The stadium will be ready well before the World Cup”, Lalchand Rajput, the joint-secretary of Mumbai Cricket Association said
on Wednesday.
The reconstruction project included upgrading the track to a hard pitch, installation of new seats, lighting, toilets, and various other facilities. Besides widening the main entrance, and increasing the capacity by demolishing and rebuilding
the North and South stands, the drainage system of the stadium has also been improved.
The renovation project that also involved revamping of the East and West stands started in 2008 and was expected to be completed in October this year. The MCA joint-secretary admitted that it has already exceeded the time limit and clearing
of debris and other materials from the ground is still going on, but did not say anything when asked about the expected time in which the entire work would be completed. He further added that a decision on practice matches at the venue will be soon taken by
the Mumbai Cricket Association.
Wankhede stadium, always in strife to grasp an international match in India, will host the final of the prestigious quadrennial event on April 2 next year. Apart from the World Cup final, two league matches of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 are also scheduled to be played
at the venue– the 1st one against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/March-c74391 and the second one against Sri Lanka five days later.
