Interesting comparison there. The insect group of mantises display an explicit predatory behavour towards other insects upon which they feed, due to which they are sometimes referred to as "preying mantis",  Similarly, Ajantha Mendis, practically preyed upon the Indian batsmen, in the recently concluded test series. The Indian batsman couldn't resist his bowling attack at all, and Mendis continued to grab wickets after wickets, much like the Mantis grabbing other insects.

Another interesting similarity is that Mantises exhibit protective camouflage by which they either blend with their surroundings, or mimic natural objects like sticks, foliage, bark, etc. By this, they are able to conceal themselves from their predators, and also their victims. Likewise, Mendis has a peculiar guile, which leaves the batsman clueless of his bowling action. He is versatile, and can adapt according to the needs, being able to bowl a wide variety of deliveries-offbreak, legbreak, flipper, googly, and ofcourse his speciality-the carrom ball. Everytime, the mystery spinner disguises his deliveries, and successfully mesmerizes the batsmen. This is quite like camouflaging himself from the opposition.

So, Mendis can be well compared to the insect Mantis, as both show predatory, and concealing nature.
