MI5 warns of terror threat at London 2012 Olympic Games
MI5 has recently issued a warning that there is a threat of a terror attack during the days that lead up to and form a part of the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games.
Most significantly, the MI5 has observed the high likelihood of those Olympic venues that are situated outside London as being targeted by the terrorists.
The Olympic venues outside of London which are most likely to be subject of the terror attacks during the time of the Games are Eton Dorney, where the rowing events are scheduled to take place. Other than that, the Brands Hatch racing circuit located in
Kent where the road-cycling event is to take place also faces threat.
In an attempt to create awareness and get the key people on the alert about the expected threat, the head of the MI5, Jonathan Evans made the cabinet of the United Kingdom up to date with the potential threat related with the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The following statements were made by the spokesman of the UK Prime Minister David Cameron regarding the cabinet briefing by the MI5 head, “There was some discussion of the Olympics and preparations in that context. It was a broad discussion about terrorism
and an assessment of the current threat and a run-through of the various issues that the Government is dealing with on the legislative side, such as the fact that we have replaced control orders with TPIMS (Terrorism Prevention and Investigation Measures)
and the various measures that are being considered in the context of the security and justice Bill.”
In order to take the necessary precautions, the main Olympic venue, the Olympic Park will be receiving the maximum amount of security when the Olympic Games start from July 27 and last till August 12. The protective measures that will be taken for the safeguard
of the Olympic Park will be the biggest peace time security operation that the country has ever seen up till this point.
It is planned that the Olympic Park will be protected by missile batteries in order to cater to any threat that might come from the air.
