Milan Jovanovic sorry for Northampton defeat
Liverpool forward Milan Jovanovic has apologised to the club’s fans, following Wednesday night’s humiliating Carling Cup exit at the hands of League Two side Northampton Town. Jovanovic
scored an early goal to put the Merseysiders in control at Anfield before Northampton levelled in the second half. The Cobblers then took a shock lead in extra-time, only to be denied a famous victory five minutes before the end of time as David N’Gog netted
off of a header. But that goal was only to delay the League Two outfit’s stunning triumph, as they emerged victorious on penalties.
For Jovanovic, he was at pains to sum up the defeat, speaking to the
Liverpool Echo.
“What can I say? It was a very difficult night for me, for all the players and the team. Of course we feel sorry for the fans.”
The Serbian’s ninth minute strike looked to have the Reds on their way to a comfortable victory, but he was at a loss as to why his side couldn’t go on to dominate the game, as would’ve
been expected of a Premier League side against League Two opposition.
“We started very nice but I don’t know why we lost the ball so fast or why we couldn’t keep the ball,” Jovanovic stated.

The summer signing thought perhaps tired legs and the lack of experience in the team may have played a part. "We had a lot of young players and sometimes you need experience. We tried
to run a lot but we lost our condition and it ended up being difficult to do something special in attack,” suggested Jovanovic.

The result comes as another bitter blow to Roy Hodgson’s men, as their difficult start to the season continues. Sitting 16th in the Premier League table and looking distinctly
average in most of their games so far this season, a tough season may lie ahead. The Carling Cup could have provided a genuine chance at silverware for the Merseyside club, but instead, focus must revert back to climbing up the Premier League table.
