MLB 2011 schedule announced
Next year’s Major League Baseball schedule was announced yesterday, throwing up some surprises.
The season will open in March next year with five games being played on Thursday, March 31st. The season will start with games at Cincinnati, Washington, St Louis, Kansas City and Yankee Stadium.
For the past 11 years baseball has opened up its season on either a Sunday or Monday, but with Commissioner David Stern wanting an October finish to the World Series, starting the season early seemed the easiest option.
The regular season will finish on September 28th.
MLB also announced the inter-league schedule for next year, with the Chicago Cubs travelling to Boston for the first time in over 90 years. The Cubs will take on the Red Sox at Fenway Park for the first time since 1918 when the two teams squared off in the World Series. The series will start on May 20th next year.
"Maybe it would be fun. It's good, no matter whether it's Fenway Park or Yankee Stadium, and it's a new city for me. I've never been to Boston," Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano said before Tuesday night's game at St Louis.
The All-Star Game is scheduled for July 12th in Arizona.
