MLB: Albert Pujols and St. Louis Cardinals resume contract negotiations
It does not come as a surprise to see some of the top players in Major League Baseball move towards a coming year with an option to move to another team.
That makes sense, especially when the move could happen at the end of a regular league season. For National League player Albert Pujols, that could be a huge possibility given his credentials and ability to stick with any team.
The St. Louis Cardinals will be hoping to make it to the National League playoffs when the 2011 regular season ends. The club is in need of established ball stars in the squad and will not be looking to lose one its best players in the league.
Pujols, who has been part of the Cardinals’ line-up for eight seasons, is looking to end his contract with the club at the end of 2011. The emphasis on Albert’s role in the club has been put into perspective given Cardinals’ move towards clinching the post-season
seat.
The club has resumed contract negotiations with the player and with Pujols’ $111 million deal ending soon, the management in the St. Louis board room is looking to extend the contract and maintain strength in the club.
Albert Pujols has an impressive record heading into 2011. The 30-year-old first baseman was amazingly stringent in the Cardinals’ line-up last season. His batting average peaked at .312, while his slugging percentage went up to .596. The Cardinals’ man smashed
42 home runs and drove in 118 runs in 159 games. He tossed in 115 runs with the bat and managed to hit 183 games.
In a 9-year-long career, Pujols has managed 1,186 runs and 1,900 hits. With an age that gives him an opportunity to grow more in the coming years, Albert has the opportunity to slot home a record 500 home runs in another two seasons. Some baseball experts
consider Pujols to be a top commodity in the future market as his valuation could peak or go beyond Alex Rodriguez’s contract deal.
With 408 home runs under his belt, Albert Pujols will only do himself justice to demand a high-paying contract. His options, nevertheless, will reach the top end if he goes into free agency at the end of the 2011 campaign.
