MLB: Commissioner Bud Selig announces support for Expanding Playoffs
It was three days ago when the San Francisco press reported on a development taking precedent within Major League Baseball (MLB). The players’ Union, MLBPA (Major League Baseball Players Association) was working on new terms and conditions to instigate the
idea of expanding the post season. The motive had been for the Union to focus more on facilitating a plan to install another stage within the playoffs which would push in more matches and teams.
Major League Baseball Commissioner, Bud Selig, was reportedly pleased with the idea and was supporting it in the executives’ meetings. The idea to extend the format gained support from MLBPA head, Michael Weiner and he came out three days ago to say that
there were still a lot of things to consider before the deal was sealed. The new chairperson emphasized on the need to address the concerns of the ball clubs in both the National and the American league. He also said to focus on the labour contracts that are
slated to expire by the end of next year. Revisions would need to be made and a consensus will have to be reached if the idea can gain any hope to materialize.
Some players have already voiced their concern and most of them stress on the duration of the campaigns. Everyone would agree that the ball players would be more prone to injury, which is why a demand to shorten the regular season has been proposed. However,
that would ultimately mean the teams would lose their revenues as less matches would be played throughout the year.
Selig however, believes the plan can take form, next year and a larger post season may not have to wait for collective bargaining with the players. He further explained, “Obviously, we have to talk to the union. These are all details we have to work out.
While I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about it, we have a lot of different opinions on the subject — how to do it, if to do it.”
Commissioner Bud however hopes the post season will not stretch into the winter season, saying “we’ll look at everything, but look, I’m already concerned.”
