MLB Gold Glove Award winners in American League for 2011 – MLB News
The Major League Baseball announced this year’s Gold Glove awards, which brought some new faces in the front row. On Tuesday, the MLB declared the annual awards for all positions in both American League and the National League. Boston Red Sox, the club who
received humiliating defeats in the month of September, dominated the American League.
Adrian Gonzalez won for first base, Dustin Pedroia for second base and Jacoby Ellsbury for centre-field. It was the second time in the history of the club that any trio achieved this award after the two out-fielders Dwight Evans and Fred Lynn along with
short-stop Rick Burleson won in 1979.
Chicago White Sox Mark Buehrle won the award for the third straight year and was the lone player from the club to represent in the AL honours. Matt Wieters of Baltimore Orioles was among one of two players from the club. Wieters received the award as a catcher
while Nick Markakis joined him in a ceremony to receive an award for right-field position.
Adrian Beltre was one of the many reasons to take the Texas Rangers into the World Series, in which the franchise lost 4-3 after a scintillating series. Beltre however managed to impress the jury for a third base position. It was his third award after winning
it in 2007 and 2008.
Erick Aybar from the Los Angeles Angels won the award for short-stop category. Kansas City Royals’ Alex Gordon won for left-field.
The managers and the coaches, who were bound not to select players from their teams, chose the players. As the new format was introduced, the out-fielders were chosen for three different categories of left, centre and right. Markakis won in right, Ellsbury
in centre, and Gordon in left.
Along with awards, the bonuses were also presented to the winning players. Gonzalez and Beltre each won $100,000 while Markakis and Aybar won $75,000 apiece. Besides this, Pedroia, Polanco, Votto and Molina each were awarded $50,000 while lowest award of
$25,000 were given to Tulowitzki and Buehrle each.
