MLB Injury Roundup – National League
Injuries are a part of every sport, some are serious, while others are just minor. With the Opening Day on everyone’s head, here is a list of players from the National League who are currently injured and may end up on the Disabled List at the beginning
of the season.
Florida Marlins - Chris Coghlan has right shoulder tendinitis and his throwing has been very closely monitored. He is expected to be fit for play by Opening Day. Mike Stanton has missed a lot of the Spring Training due to a quadriceps strain but returned
in full force by hitting two runs.
New York Mets - There are chances that Jason Bay would be starting the season on the Disabled List given his rib-cage discomfort. He’s already missed two games because of back stiffness. Ronny Paulino, the backup catcher is headed towards the Disabled List
due to some stomach issues and hopefully Johan Santana would be out of the list by that time.
Philadelphia Phillies - Everyone is aware of Chase Utley and his injuries. The question rises, would he ever be able to return to the field? Brad Lidge just underwent a MRI today so he could be checked for structural damage in his shoulder. Ryan Madson will
be taking his place as closer since he will be starting the season on the Disabled List. Although Placido Polanco missed two weeks due to a hyper extended elbow, he is back on the field and well.
Washington Nationals - Adam LaRoche is suffering from a slight tear in his rotator cuff. He decided to play through it, undergoing rehab.
Cincinnati Reds - Johnny Cueto has shoulder inflammation whereas Homer Bailey is suffering from shoulder impairment. Both of them will be together on the Disabled List. There they will be joined by backup out-fielder Fred Lewis who has a strained oblique.
Although Cueto is back, Bailey is expected to miss at least two starts.
Houston Astros - Jason Castro will not be playing for the entire season with his damaged knee. Catcher J. R. Towles has a balky back and Clint Barmes will probably be out for four to six weeks.
Milwaukee Brewers - Although Shaun Marcum started off with a stiff right shoulder, he managed to throw four innings and later did not complain of any pain. Zack Greinke will be returning somewhere in late April after he suffered a fractured rib while playing
basketball. Corey Hart will also be coming back mid April after he strained rib-cage muscles.
Pittsburgh Pirates - Ryan Doumit and Jason Jaramillo will be left behind on the plate as a bad back will most probably leave Chris Snyder on the Disabled List.
St Louis Cardinals - Adam Wrainwright underwent the Tommy John surgery whose rehabilitation takes about 12-14 months. Kyle McClellan will be taking his spot in the rotation.
Arizona Diamondbacks - J. J. Putz is still hoping to be the Diamondbacks closer on Opening Day but a stiff back has limited Putz from most of the action.
Colorado Rockies - Ian Stewart had to leave a game due to a tight hamstring and before that he had already missed time on the field due to a right knee sprain. Still Stewart doesn’t seem too worried.
Los Angeles Dodgers - Jon Garland is just getting back to building up his strength after suffering from a strained oblique in the spring training. He will probably need a couple of weeks to do that. Backup catcher Navarro is also suffering from the same
type of strained oblique. Casey Blake has back inflammation and will be starting the season on the Disabled List.
San Diego Padres - Mat Latos is suffering from bursitis in his right shoulder which will land him in the Disabled List.
San Francisco Giants - Although Brian Wilson is going to begin the season on the Disabled List due to a strained oblique he is expected to be back by the start of April. Play-off hero Cody Ross is on the list as well after a calf strain which could make
him miss up to three weeks. Nate Schierholtz will be taking his place.
