The Texas Rangers were back in the centre fold of competing for the major title in Major League Baseball. They had never been in the World Series and now it seemed like the chance to prevail for glory was at the helm of a welcomed
possibility. The team had persevered for so long and now a chance at the glory was not a myth, but a simple fact. The side was going up against another West division champion, like itself. The only difference between the two sides was that the ball clubs belonged
to two different leagues in Major League Baseball. They were meeting to decide the best team in the competition and with 3 games down, 4 more were left to be played.
The Rangers were facing a fiery San Francisco Giants side and it was crucial to win the bout as they lagged behind in the series with a wins tally on 1–2. Two youngsters took the mound for the two sides and it was considered a
match between two prime starting pitchers with oozing talent. The visitors in the Rangers Ballpark were leading the score line with 2 runs and the hosts were still hitless.
Ron Washington was furious with his side, but he showed little emotion as the sides went ahead with the contest. The Rangers took the bottom 3rd inning into play, but ended up with nothing in the end as the 21 year old
Madison Bumgarner restricted the veteran hitting faction from cumulating massive damage. Tommy Hunter was replaced after the 4th inning and as both teams moved forward in the game, runs were getting difficult to come by.
It wasn’t till the top 7th that the Giants prolonged their lead. Travis Ishikawa began the session by striking out to reliever Darren Oliver. Edgar Renteria came in next and slotted the ball to the left for a single.
Nate Schierholtz was next to come out of the dugout, but went back in after he struck out swinging to the game saver. It was Andres Torres who got the cogs moving, as his double to the deep centre to get Edgar home for the 3rd run, in the encounter.
The Rangers were in a wide hole of depression and it wasn’t going to be easy for the side to come out of the trench. Bumgarner was perfect to say the least and in the bottom 7th, the Texan offensive got the chance to
move beyond first base. However, that was evidently not enough as the Giants took advantage with their defensive strength. When it looked like there was still a chance for the hosts, the fixture was put out of reach as Buster Posey put Darren O’Day away for
a massive 419 feet homer to the centre in the top of the 8th.
The match was now likely over. The Rangers shut down and Madison Bumgarner stole all the spirit away from the hosts. He ended his 8 innings of pitching with no runs conceded and only 3 hits. That was history in the making and the
young rookie did well to impress both sides. Tommy Hunter, however, was ineffective. His 4 innings of pitching saw him concede two runs off 5 hits.
When the match ended, Giants General Manager, Brian Sabean, shared a few words with the press. He said, "Yesterday was a very helter-skelter situation. You're worried about families, worried about signing balls, worried about tickets,
about travel. I'm not using that as an excuse, but today they were much more relaxed, much more confident."
Aubrey Huff, who batted in the first run, was also present and he said, “With a win, I usually sleep pretty good in the playoffs, with a loss pretty shaky. Hopefully we sleep good tonight. We've got a big challenge tomorrow with
Cliff Lee. We got him last game, but you know he's going to come out and really want to get us.”
