MLB Round up: San Diego Padres defeat Chicago Cubs 2-1 in three-game series
National League’s Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres both displayed an amazing battle in a thrilling three game series. Padres did a marvellous job as they confirmed a 2-1 victory in this series. San Diego have had an excellent season so far as they attained
a satisfactory Win-Loss record during the current regular season.
Let us take a brief overview:
Game 1 - September 26: San Diego Padres 2 – Chicago Cubs 0
Padres sealed a 2-0 victory in the first game, as Mat Latos was remarkable with his pitching. He threw his individual seven innings with an ERA of 3.47 and struck-out nine batters in the Padres impressive victory. Latos was excited after this win and said,
“That's what happens when you hang a slider. It was just a bad pitch by me. If that pitch is in the dirt, he might swing over the top of it.”
On the other side, Cubs’ batters were unable to post any run throughout the game. Casey Coleman pitched well for the Cubs but that was not enough to grab a win for his team. He was able to strike-out seven batters during his 99 pitches and gave away two
walks, five hits, two runs and two earned runs with an ERA of 6.40.
Game 2 - September 27: San Diego Padres 2 – Chicago Cubs 6
In the second game, Cubs outclassed the Padres by 6-2. Cubs’ starter, Matt Garza pitched the ball in right line as he threw seven innings and permitted just two earned runs, five hits, two walks and two runs with an ERA of 3.32. Garza struck-out eight batters
on his 122 pitches.
Cubs’ manager, Mike Quade said, “Come h**l or high water he was going to pitch. It was an excellent effort.”
Padres’ third baseman Chase Headley and second baseman Orlando Hudson both put in collective two runs on the score-board. Anthony Bass had a shaky day with the ball as he pitched five innings with an ERA of 1.68 and permitted five hits, one run, two walks,
one earned run and one home-run.
Game 3 - September 28: San Diego Padres 9 – Chicago Cubs 2
During last game of the series, Cubs lost 9-2 as Padres’ catcher Nick Hundley shined when he hit triple RBIs and went 2-for-5 with an average of .288. He said, “We didn't want to be finishing today. At this point last year we were right where the four teams
are today. That's where we want to be consistently.”
Cubs’ batters contributed only two runs in the series decider. Steve Clevenger and Jeff Baker added two runs to keep the Cubs alive. However, a brilliant team effort gave the Padres a series win.
