MLB Roundup: Atlanta Braves sweep the series against Toronto Blue Jays
Game 1: Tim Hudson’s pitching helps Atlanta Braves beat Toronto Blue Jays 2-0
Tim Hudson pitched eight scoreless innings on June 20 and hit a homer to guide the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field to a 2-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.
The series first game was effectively a commentary to the ever improving quality pitches of Hudson and his designation as a hitter. He also became the first pitcher to homer against Toronto since Lira achieved this honour at Montreal on July 8, 2000.
After pitching seven strong and scoreless innings himself, Hudson came on to the field as a hitter to blast a two-run homer, strengthening the Braves’ grip on the game. Once he did that, he pitched the eighth inning with characteristic excellence.
Earning his 20th save in 25 chances, the closer Craig Kimbrel struck-out Jose Bautista, Corey Patterson and Adam Lind.
Romero gave up a total of six hits while Hudson gave up two in the eight innings that he pitched followed by Kimbrel who gave up two hits in the ninth inning, but no run to secure a 2-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.
GAME 2: Atlanta Braves devastate the Toronto Blue Jays 5-1
Turner Field witnessed another exciting game on June 21 that resulted in Atlanta Braves’ 5-1 win over the straining Toronto Blue Jays.
The game was dominated by a quality team effort that the Braves put on saw the Blue Jays struggling hard to regain their momentum.
Brian McCann hit a two run homer, Jason Heyward went for an RBI single and Mike Minor pitched seven strong innings to outclass the Blue Jays.
So strong was Minor in the innings that he pitched, he allowed only five hits compared to the 10 hits of Stewart in just over three innings.
Heyward and Adrian Gonzalez both had a couple of hits each as only Adam Lind of the Blue Jays could have two hits in the only one run that he and his team managed to score.
Eric O'Flaherty and Jonny Venters pitched shut-out eighth and ninth innings to complete the 5-1 win and the series second victory for the Atlanta Braves.
GAME 3: Atlanta Braves win the series as Blue Jays beat 5-1
The Atlanta Braves swept the three-game series on June 22 by beating the Toronto Blue Jays 5-1. The game at Turner Field remained in the Braves’ grip as the Blue Jays failed to put a powerful show in front of a packed stadium.
Brandon Beach threw six strong innings, giving up only four hits and allowing one run to complete the three game sweep.
Dan Uggla got a two-run homer in the second that gave the Braves a 2-0 edge followed by an RBI single of Bautista in the third, that took down the lead to 2-1. McCann homered right to take the score to 4-1 by the end of the third inning.
Conrad homered to right, giving an edge to the Braves, a lead that the Braves’ relievers Linebrink, Venters and Kimbrel successfully defended to sweep the series.
