MLB Roundup: Kansas City Royals came from behind to win three-game series 2-1
Game 1: Angels rout Royals 10-8
The Los Angeles Angels defeated the Kansas City Royals 10-8 after a close confrontation series opener at Kauffman Stadium on May 30.
After Bobby Abreu hit a leading run against the Royals’ starter Luke Hochevar in the top of the first inning, they piled six vital runs in first two innings. Alex Gordon and Eric Hosmer launched a homer in the second and then Hosmer scored an RBI double
before Jeff Francoeur hit a sacrifice fly for the sixth run.
Abreu and Alberto Callaspo each scored an RBI single in the third while Torii Hunter first hit an RBI single in the fifth and then launched a homer in the seventh inning to trim the lead to 5-6. As hope was rising for the Angels to get the lead, the Royals’
Wilson Betemit and Chris Getz each scored an RBI single to widen the lead 8-5.
However, Mark Trumbo and Albert Pujols launched a homer each while Hunter blistered another homer in the ninth inning to take his team into 9-8. Trumbo added another RBI in ninth to cement the Angels win in the series opener.
Game 2: Royals bounce back to crush Angels 7-3
After losing the first game, the Royals bounced back with a 7-3 win over the opposition on the last day of May at the same venue.
Angels scored two runs in the first inning to earn a lead which remained there until the bottom of the third inning when Alex Gordon hit an RBI single to nip the Royals scoreless game. Melky Cabrera followed him with an RBI single while Eric Hosmer scored
an RBI double and Billy Butler added the fifth run of the inning.
Jeff Francoeur drove in a single to elevate the lead 6-2 in the sixth inning. However, the Angels’ Jeff Mathis scored an RBI single to reduce it to 3-6. In the seventh inning, Francoeur scored another RBI to widen the lead to 7-3 which remained there until
the end of the game.
The Royals’ starter, Jeff Francis allowed three runs on eight hits, walked two and struck-out two to win his second game of the season.
Game 3: Royals defeat Angels 2-0
The Royals defeat Angels in the third game with 2-0 to clinch a series with 2-1 at the Kauffman Stadium, on June 1.
The Royals’ starter Felipe Paulino along with the relievers and closer had an outstanding game with the ball. Paulino, making his first start with Royals against the Angels, did not allow any run on four hits and struck-out four batters over five innings.
Reliever Greg Holland took six batters and allowed only two hits over two innings. The Angels’ starter Tyler Chatwood did not yield any run on five hits and struck-out two batters over his seven innings spell.
The Royals’ relievers Everett Teaford, Louis Coleman and closer Tim Collins remained scoreless over their short innings pitching. The Angels’ closer Scott Downs, on the other hand, gave away a decisive two-run homer to Billy Butler in the ninth inning.
