MLB Roundup: San Diego Padres take series against Boston Red Sox 2-1
GAME 1: Boston Red Sox humiliate San Diego Padres 14-5
The Boston Red Sox began the three-game series on June 20 by outplaying San Diego Padres at Fenway Park with an emphatic 14-5 victory.
While the Red Sox defence remained predictably strong with their dominating play in confining the Padres’ offence, Boston’s hitters made things grimly difficult for the guest team with a 10-run seventh inning.
While Andrew Miller kept in check the Padres’ offence, David Ortiz singled in the first, earned the second RBI in the third followed by Jacoby Ellsbury’s run in the third to triple the lead. It was not before the sixth inning that Orlando Hudson hit a three-run
homer to level the score.
However, the 10th run seventh inning changed the course of the game as Adrian Gonzalez drove in three runs, Marco Scutaro, Jason Varitek, Josh Reddick, Dustin Pedroia got a single each with the two-run homer of Kevin Youkilis.
Ellsbury drew his second run in the eighth while Chris Denorfia and Jesus Guzman of the Padres got a single each in the eighth and ninth inning. Neither of which could save the Padres from losing by a big 14-5 margin from the Red Sox in the series first
game
Game 2: Anthony Rizzo brings the Padres back in the series with 5-4 win
The series’ second game on June 21 saw San Diego Padres beat the Boston Red Sox 5-4 at the same venue.
Kevin Youkilis maintained his form with his hit in the first inning to get an early lead for the Red Sox. Alfredo Aceves of the Red Sox could not stop Jason Barlett and Chase Headley from earning a single each to give the Padres a 2-1 lead by the end of
second inning.
Cameron Maybin and Nick Hundley drove in a single each in the top of third inning to take the Padres lead up to 4-1 which sprang the Red Sox offence into action, prompting Jacoby Ellsbury’s single to centre to make it 4-2 for Boston.
Josh Reddick made it 4-3 in the fourth inning followed by Adrian Gonzalez’s RBI single to level the score at a time when the game was effectively in the grip of the Padres.
Anthony Rizzo hit a routine grounder for an out to give a lead to the Padres in the seventh that was successfully defended by the relief pitchers, culminating with a 5-4 win of the Padres in the series second game.
Game 3: The Padres clinch the series with 5-1 win
The third game at Fenway Park on June 22 resulted in the 5-1 win of San Diego over the Red Sox, entitling them to a 2-1 win in the series.
Regaining their confidence by winning the second game, the Padres’ Will Venable got an early single in the first to take 1-0 lead followed by a 4-run fourth inning that put everything upside down for the struggling Red Sox.
Venable drove in his and the game’s second run, while Jason Bartlett made it 3-0 with an RBI single. Chase Headley hit a two-run homer to cruise past Boston’s starter John Lackey. The 5-0 lead was then in effect a Clayton Richard feat to defend and convert
into victory.
Adrian Gonzalez scored the only single for the Red Sox in the fifth following which none of the Red Sox hitters could effectively play the Padres pitchers, as the team marched forward to win the three-game series by 2-1.
