MLB Season Review: Atlanta Braves edge out Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 in three-game series
National League’s Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies both were energetic after ending their 2011 season in a style. Braves were astonishing and did a striking job as they completed a 2-1 victory in the series after hammering the Phillies comfortably.
Let us capture an overview of these games and see how the Braves subjugated the Phillies.
Game 1 – May 6: Atlanta Braves 5 – Philadelphia Phillies 0
Braves managed a 5-0 win in the series starter, as Derek Lowe was impressive with his pitching. He had three strike-outs with an ERA of 5.63 in the Reds convincing victory. Speaking to reporters, Lowe said, “That's about as mad as I've ever been for pitching
good. It's frustrating for not being able to stay in. But a 5-0 win in this ballpark against a talented team, we'll take it.”
Phillies were unable to score any run in the opening game. Cliff Lee threw beautifully for the Phillies but that was not adequate to secure a win for his team. He was able to strike-out 16 batters on his 117 pitches and permitted nine hits with three earned
runs.
Game 2 – May 7: Atlanta Braves 0 – Philadelphia Phillies 3
During second game, Phillies defeated the Braves 3-0. Phillies’ starter, Kyle Kendrick threw the ball in good line as he pitched five innings and surrendered only one walk and two hits on his 69 pitches. Kendrick had three strike-outs with an ERA of 1.50.
Kendrick said, “I love starting. It's nice to go out there and help the team win. I got early outs, stayed out of trouble and pitched as deep as I could.”
Braves were struggling with the bat and were unable to take any run until the end of the game. Julio Teheran had a shaky day with the ball as he threw just over four innings with an ERA of 5.79 and gave away four hits and three runs with only one strike-out
on his 86 pitches.
Game 3 – May 8: Atlanta Braves 5 – Philadelphia Phillies 2
During the final game of the series, Phillies lost 5-2. Braves’ first baseman Freddie Freeman shined as he struck one RBI and went 3-for-4 with an average of .241. Braves’ starter, Jair Jurrjens pitched just over six innings and allowed only one walk and
eight hits including two strike-outs.
Phillies were able to score just two runs in the series finale and failed to take over the Braves. Phillies’ starter, Cole Hamels pitched seven innings and gave away three runs, five hits and three earned runs including nine strike-outs on his 92 pitches.
However, a collective effort kept the Braves on top against the struggling Phillies throughout the series.
