MLB Season Review: Chicago Cubs defeat Houston Astros 2-1 in three-game series
National League’s Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros both went head-to-head in a thrilling three game series. Cubs did a brilliant job as they sealed a 2-1 victory in this series after defeating the Astros convincingly. Cubs have had a remarkable season so
far as they got an acceptable Win-Loss record during spring training season.
Let us take a brief summary of these exciting games:
Game 1 – April 11: Chicago Cubs 5 – Houston Astros 4
Cubs directed a 5-4 win in the first game, as Ryan Dempster was incredible with his pitching. He threw just over six respective innings with an ERA of 6.30 and struck-out nine batters in the Cubs victory. Cubs’ manager Mike Quade said, “The kids did really,
really well. I liked watching them. It's fun to watch them.”
On the other side, Astros’ batters were able to add only four runs right through the complete game. Nelson Figueroa pitched well for the Astros but that was not enough to steal a win for his team. He was able to strike-out only three batters during his 88
pitches and gave away two walks, eight hits, five runs, no home-run and five earned runs with an ERA of 10.61.
Game 2 – April 12: Chicago Cubs 2 – Houston Astros 11
In the second game, Astros outclassed the Cubs by 11-2. Astros’ starter, Brett Myers pitched the ball in accurate line as he threw seven innings and allowed eight hits with an ERA of 1.77. Myers struck-out five batters during his 100 pitches.
Myers said, “I didn't feel like my location was too good tonight, but I was able to work around falling behind a lot of guys.”
Cubs were shaky with the bat and added just two runs until the end of the game. James Russell had an insecure day with the ball as he pitched just over an innings with an ERA of 9.82 and surrendered seven hits with five runs on his 55 pitches. Russell struck-out
only one batter and gave away four earned runs.
Game 3 – April 13: Chicago Cubs 9 – Houston Astros 5
During the last game of the series, Astros lost by 9-5. Cubs’ first baseman Jeff Baker shined as he struck two RBIs and went 2-for-5 with an average of .385. Quade said, “There are a lot of reasons you win and lose ball games, so there were more reasons
for us to win tonight because the club picked up Z.”
Astros’ batters were able to yield only five runs in a series finale. Wandy Rodriguez pitched five innings and gave away nine hits with two walks on his 86 pitches. However, a tremendous team effort gave the Cubs the series win against the struggling Astros.
