MLB Season Review: Cincinnati Reds edge out Chicago Cubs 2-1 in three-game series
National League’s Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs battled it out in a thrilling three-game series. Reds were astonishing and did a striking job as they completed a 2-1 victory in the series after hammering the Cubs comfortably.
Let us take an overview of these games and see how the Reds dominated the Cubs.
Game 1 – May 6: Cincinnati Reds 5 – Chicago Cubs 4
Reds managed a 5-4 win in the series starter, as Edinson Volquez was impressive with his pitching. He had three strike-outs with an ERA of 5.63 in the Reds convincing victory. Speaking to reporters, Volquez said, “At the beginning of the game I thought it
was going to be a different game. But then in the fourth inning I started losing my fastball command.”
Cubs were able to score only four runs in the opening game. Matt Garza threw beautifully for the Cubs but that was not adequate to earn a win for his team. He was able to strike-out only seven batters on his 86 pitches and permitted six hits with five earned
runs.
Game 2 – May 7: Cincinnati Reds 2 – Chicago Cubs 3
During the second game, Cubs defeated the Reds 3-2. Cubs’ starter, Casey Coleman threw the ball in good line as he pitched six innings and surrendered only three walks and four hits on his 98 pitches. Coleman had six strike-outs with an ERA of 6.29.
Carlos Pena said, “I'm just gonna keep giving it all I have. I have faith in this ballclub and I have faith in myself that at the end of the year we'll be where we want to be.”
Reds struggled with the bat and were able to take only two runs until the end of the game. Bronson Arroyo had a shaky day with the ball as he threw just over seven innings with an ERA of 3.68 and gave away seven hits and one run with only three strike-outs
on his 95 pitches.
Game 3 – May 8: Cincinnati Reds 2 – Chicago Cubs 0
During the final game of the series, Cubs lost 2-0. Reds’ centre-fielder Drew Stubbs shined as he struck one RBI and went 2-for-4 with an average of .264. Reds’ starter, Johnny Cueto pitched six innings and allowed only one walk and five hits including four
strike-outs.
Cubs were unable to score any run in the series finale and failed to take over the Reds. Cubs’ starter, Ryan Dempster pitched seven innings and gave away two runs, five hits and two earned runs including four strike-outs on his 81 pitches. However, a tremendous
group effort kept the Reds on top against the incompatible Cubs throughout the series.
