MLB Season Review: Cincinnati Reds rout Houston Astros 2-1 in three-game series
National League’s Houston Astros and Cincinnati Reds battled it out in an exciting three-game series. Reds were extraordinary and did a noteworthy job as they completed a 2-1 victory in the series after beating the Astros comfortably.
Let us take a rundown of these three games and see how the Reds defeated the Astros.
Game 1 – May 3: Houston Astros 10 – Cincinnati Reds 4
Astros managed a 10-4 win in the series starter, as J.A. Happ was impressive with his pitching. He had five strike-outs with an ERA of 6.23 in the Astros convincing victory. Speaking to reporters, Happ said, “It's just trying to make contact, trying to be
aggressive, I guess. I don't know. The ball's falling for me. To be honest, I felt that was the best stuff I've had all year.”
Reds’ batters were able to put in only four runs in the opening game. Mike Leake threw beautifully for the Reds but that was not enough to secure a win for his team. He was able to strike-out only five batters on his 72 pitches and permitted seven hits with
seven earned runs.
Game 2 – May 4: Houston Astros 2 – Cincinnati Reds 3
During the second game, Reds defeated the Astros 3-2. Reds’ starter, Travis Wood threw the ball in good line as he pitched six innings and surrendered four walks and five hits on his 104 pitches. Wood had seven strike-outs with an ERA of 6.21.
Reds’ manager, Dusty Baker said, “Sometimes, you have games that you can't believe you won, just like sometimes you have games you can't believe you lost.”
Astros were struggling with the bat and were able to take only two runs until the end of the game. Aneury Rodriguez had a shaky day with the ball as he threw five innings with an ERA of 4.15 and gave away one hit and one walk with three strike-outs on his
83 pitches.
Game 3 – May 5: Houston Astros 4 – Cincinnati Reds 10
During the final game of the series, Astros lost 10-4. Reds’ catcher Ryan Hanigan shined as he struck three RBIs and went 3-for-4 with an average of .246. Reds’ starter, Homer Bailey pitched six innings and allowed only one run and one walk including seven
strike-outs.
Astros were able to score only four runs in the series finale and failed to dominate the Reds. Astros’ starter, Brett Myers pitched just over five innings and gave away six runs, nine hits, six earned runs and three walks on his 99 pitches. However, a tremendous
group effort kept the Reds on top against the struggling Astros throughout the series.
