MLB Season Review: Detroit Tigers beat New York Yankees 3-1 in four-game series
American League’s New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers both were energetic after ending their 2011 season in a style. Tigers were amazing and did a major job as they confirmed a 3-1 victory in the series after defeating the Yankees comfortably.
Let us take a summary of these games and see how the Tigers dominated the Yankees.
Game 1 – May 2: New York Yankees 5 – Detroit Tigers 3
Yankees directed a 5-3 win in the first game, as Bartolo Colon was incredible with his pitching. He threw his respective seven innings with an ERA of 3.00 and struck-out seven batters in the Yankees victory. Speaking to reporters, Colon said, “Every time
I face him, he gets a hit off me. I tried my best, but he always ends up with a base hit.”
On the other hand, Tigers’ batters were able to score only three runs right through the complete game. Justin Verlander threw nicely for the Tigers but that was not enough to get a win for his team. He was able to strike-out only eight batters during his
127 pitches and gave away three earned runs including eight hits with an ERA of 3.75.
Game 2 – May 3: New York Yankees 2 – Detroit Tigers 4
In the second game, Tigers outclassed the Yankees 4-2 and levelled the four-game series 1-1. Tigers’ starter, Brad Penny pitched the ball in accurate line as he threw six innings and allowed six hits with an ERA of 5.23. Penny was able to strike-out only
one batter on his 98 pitches and gave away two walks with one run.
Yankees showed some unsteadiness with the bat and took just two runs until the end of the game. CC Sabathia had a shaky day with the ball as he pitched seven innings with an ERA of 2.68 and surrendered 10 hits with four earned runs on his 119 pitches. Sabathia
struck-out only six batters on his respective innings pitched.
Game 3 – May 4: New York Yankees 0 – Detroit Tigers 4
During the third game of the series, Yankees lost 4-0. Tigers’ right-fielder Magglio Ordonez shined as he struck two RBIs and went 2-for-3 with an average of .188.
Tigers’ manager, Jim Leyland said, “The eighth inning for Max turned out to be what I call a stressful inning. But not after the eighth inning.”
Yankees’ batters were unable to yield any run in this important game. Freddy Garcia pitched seven innings and gave away four runs, 10 hits, four earned runs and two walks on his 112 pitches.
Game 4 – May 5: New York Yankees 3 – Detroit Tigers 6
Tigers won the series finale 6-3 as each player executed superbly in their respective departments. Tigers’ starter, Rick Porcello threw his seven innings with an ERA of 3.93 and struck-out three batters. However, the Tigers were on top during the entire
series and sealed it comfortably.
