MLB Season Review: New York Mets rout Washington Nationals 2-1 in three-game series
National League’s Washington Nationals and New York Mets were dynamic after finishing their 2011 season in style. Mets were amazing and did a significant job as they completed a 2-1 victory in this series after defeating the Nationals comfortably.
Let us take an overview and see how the Mets dominated the Nationals.
Game 1 – April 26: New York Mets 6 – Washington Nationals 4
Mets directed a 6-4 win in the first game, as Chris Young was impressive with his pitching. He had three strike-outs with an ERA of 2.65 in the Mets convincing victory. Mets’ manager, Terry Collins said, “I think he's starting to get confident in his play.
We talked before the game about. He comes up with big hits and that's what his career has been about.”
Nationals’ batters were able to score only four runs in the first game. Jordan Zimmermann threw beautifully for the Nationals but that was not enough to earn a win for his team. He was able to strike-out only one batter on his 73 pitches and permitted nine
hits with five earned runs.
Game 2 – April 27: New York Mets 6 – Washington Nationals 3
During the second game, Mets outshined the Nationals 6-3. Mets’ starter, R.A. Dickey threw the ball in good line as he pitched just over six innings and surrendered just one walk and eight hits on his 92 pitches. Dickey had three strike-outs with an ERA
of 3.82.
Speaking to reporters, Collins said, “One of the things I like, and it may came back to bite us -- [Reyes'] passion to play, his energy. I think it's contagious. He's an excitable guy.”
Nationals were struggling with the bat and scored just three runs until the end of the game. Tom Gorzelanny had an average day with the ball as he threw just over six innings with an ERA of 3.97 and gave away five hits, one run, one walk, no homer and one
earned run on his 85 pitches.
Game 3 – April 28: New York Mets 3 – Washington Nationals 4
During the final game of the series, Mets lost 4-3. Nationals’ short-stop Ian Desmond shined as he completed two runs including one RBI and went 2-for-4 with an average of .220. Nationals’ starter Livan Hernandez pitched eight innings and allowed seven hits,
three runs, two earned runs including five strike-outs.
Mets were able to post only three runs in the series finale and failed to sweep the Nationals. Chris Capuano pitched just over five innings and gave away four runs, 10 hits, four earned runs and one home-run on his 94 pitches. However, a team effort kept
the Mets on peak against the inconsistent Nationals throughout the series.
