MLB Season Review: New York Yankees sweep Baltimore Orioles 2-0
American League’s Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees both went head-to-head in a thrilling three game series. Yankees did an imposing job as they brushed aside the Orioles 2-0 in this series. Yankees have had an amazing season as they got an exemplary
Win-Loss record during spring training season this year.
Let us take a brief summary of these inspiring games:
Game 1 – April 13: Baltimore Orioles 4 – New York Yankees 7
Yankees managed a 7-4 win in the first game, as A.J. Burnett was impressive with his pitching. He had five strike-outs with an ERA of 4.67 in the Yankees convincing victory. Yankees’ manager, Joe Girardi was excited after this impressive win as he said,
“Maybe the couple of days helped. You want to be able to get on the board and get your starting pitcher some runs early.”
Alex Rodriguez had a memorable day with the bat as he went 2-or-3 with an average of .355 and hit three RBIs including one run. Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira, Rodriguez and Jorge Posada each showed their contribution and added seven runs collectively to give
the Yankees a competitive lead over the Orioles.
Conversely, Orioles’ batters contributed only four runs to keep themselves alive. Ryan Roberts, Mark Reynolds, Matt Wieters and Robert Andino each added four runs jointly for the Orioles. Chris Tillman pitched well for his team but that was not enough to
grab a win for Baltimore. He struck-out two batters on his 57 pitches. Tillman permitted six runs, nine hits, one walk, one home-run and six earned runs with an ERA of 7.30.
Game 2 – April 14: Baltimore Orioles 5 – New York Yankees 6
In the second and final game of the series, Yankees outclassed the Orioles 6-5. Yankees’ starter, Phil Hughes threw the ball in good line as he pitched just over four innings and surrendered only five runs, seven hits, one home-run and five earned runs on
his 70 pitches. Hughes had two strike-outs with an ERA of 13.94.
Girardi said, “Our guys kept kinda chippin' away, and then we get the big homer from Jorge in the ninth and then the walk to Tex and the double by Alex to start the inning off.”
Orioles’ Nick Markakis, Luke Scott and Cesar Izturis were the only three players who scored five runs for their team. Jake Arrieta had a shaky day with the ball as he threw six innings with an ERA of 7.04 and gave away five hits, three runs, one walk, no
homer and three earned runs on his 90 pitches. Arrieta struck-out two batters on his respective pitched innings.
However, a decent group effort kept the Yankees on top and they swept the Orioles comfortably.
